The Apex of All Things Hendrix
I'm serious. Whoa! This is overwhelming. The best, most creative and arguably most eclectic double-album I have ever heard. This is all about the studio effects: For all his talents as a singer, guitarist and songwriter, he was also quite the producer. Listen to the amazing twenty-minutes suite that merges "Rainy Day, Dream Away", "1983. . . (A Merman I Should Turn to Be)", "Moon Turn the Tides. . . Gently, Gently Away" and "Still Raining, Still Dreaming". Could Deep Purple succeed making a suite that combined elements of psychedelia, jazz, hard rock, blues, and the avant-garde? I have my doubts. They can barely keep me interested for five minutes on a good day (unless it's "Demon's Eye", now that's a good song), let alone twenty. The other hugely long song is the blues jam "Voodoo Chile", which is also excellently done: fellow '60s luminaries Steve Windwood and Jack Casady guest on organ and bass, respectively. The remaining songs are all quite diverse: you get some bone-crunching psychedelic hard rock ("All Along the Watchtower", sporting one of the most famous guitar solos ever; "Voodoo Child (Slight Return), with its instantly recognizable wah-wah riff; the stomping protest "House Burning Down"; careening, punkish "Crosstown Traffic"; "Gypsy Eyes", with strong tribal beats), some psychedelic blues ("Come On (Let the Good Times Roll)"), a bit of psychedelic pop ("Burning of the Midnight Lamp", a pseudo-symphony with layers of keyboards, guitars and backing vocals: like Spector, but actually good), and even smooth psychedelic soul ("(Have You Ever Been) To Electric Ladyland"). Don't worry, though, it doesn't sound dated at all: in fact, it's one for the ages. Not the ideal starting point for Hendrix, but far and away his best album. .

Let the good times roll
Jimi Hendrix included a very diverse group of song, from blues to jams to guitar freakouts. This is one of the best double albums ever released. It even includes his only American pop hit, a cover of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower". This is an essential album for Hendrix fans.
