Great uncut Jimmi I personally like it for the presence of the organ to go along with Jimi's blazing guitar. This is some great Hendrix. If you are a Hendrix fan I would say it is worth every penny.
Nice but not great
I bought this just for the unreleased material and I was pleasantly surprised. In short, if you really want to hear Hendrix play the blues then get the Jimi Hendrix Blues CD. Georgia Blues with Lonnie Youngblood is amazing and shows how well Jimi could fit in with a very traditional blues setting and still be Jimi. It was fascinating to hear his note selections over the standard stormy monday progression this song is in. Lonnie performance alone is enough to make this track very enjoyable. I have problems with some of the other tracks. For instance, the studio version of Red House, everyone has heard. It contributed nothing to this compilation. THere are some live treatments of Red House that show Jimi as a genius and true master of the blues and jazz. Jimi once said "for what I have heard most jazz players are just playing blues". Jimi's rendition of Red House from San Diego 69 would have really proved something. I love Let the Good Times Roll but it also adds nothing to this disc since its on Electric Ladyland. Several other tracks are outtakes from the boxset. Nothing new there and not really blues standard by any means. Now, I did really like the inclusion of the studio version of Hear My Train A Comin'. Jimi did that in the studio many times and never quite captures what he could do with the song live. This version would have been a worthy candidate of release on his final studio album and its about time it saw the light of day (in this excellent sounding mix/mastered form). Finally, the running order is just sorta cobbled together. But I admit despite all that could have been better, I did enjoy listening to this CD a few times then it got old fast. Again, for a true Hendrix pure blues extravaganza with more material and longer play time check out Jimi Hendrix Blues. Otherwise, if your a hardcore fan, you gotta have this and its worth it. I guess my main point here is that this CD does not really enlighten the naive listener to what Hendrix really could do within the blues medium any more that Electric Ladyland does. Nope, not by a long shot. Get Hendrix Blues.
WORTH BUYING!
I don't know what came over me but I was intrigued and I snapped it up without a thought. I saw this recording and the first thing I noticed was Martin Scorsese's name above Jimi Hendrix' name. Then on the way home I started thinking "What is Martin Scorsese doing? Capitalizing on Jimi Hendrix?" I thought "Even if he's a huge fan what can he (MS) possibly bring to a collection of tunes from a great axeman who left us long ago?" Buyer's remorse set in and it wasn't the purchase price, it was the premise. I'm usually disappointed and/or sorry when I buy compilation albums but that was not the case here. I don't care if either Experience Hendrix or Martin Scorsese had more control over the content and what order it was laid down, I think it's a great grouping of Hendrix playing the true blues in so many formats and situations as to be an example of both his range and versatility while also showcasing many interpretations of the blues.
The tracks are not ordered in some historical hierarchy following Jimi's growth or transition from one point to the next in his artistry, yet the order does not seem abstract either. For those who own several Hendrix recordings and see this album as redundancy, well that might be the case. Keep in mind those same folks would need to play several recordings to get this same mix of cuts; if they want to listen to it all at once they'll need to burn a custom CD for themselves. After all the pops and clicks from replaying vinyl LPs are faithfully reproduced onto their fresh new CD, they still won't have the two unreleased cuts to listen to.
The master recordings were dusted off and these tracks were laid down so that I for one, could have a unique Hendrix CD to blast over the JBL sound system in my late model old-man-sedan. What you do with the CD if you buy it, is your decision. Me? I'm going to listen to it until the laser on my car's CD changer cuts it into annular rings.
Just starting off on Hendrix? You couldn't choose a finer place to begin!
If you once owned a few Hendrix albums and they've all slipped away at the garage sales of yore, you may be wanting to re-immerse yourself. I think you'd be happier with this excellent selection of tunes than if you bought a duplicate of an album you once owned and knew well. If you need to get reacquainted with Jimi Hendrix you'll do more than that listening to this CD; you'll learn new things just by listening. After all that I must say. . . vinyl forever! Long Live Analog!.
If Purple Haze and Fire are all the Hendrix you know, then....
If Purple Haze and Fire are all the Hendrix you know, then. . give this album a listen. There is a nice variety of tracks- from hard rockin' blues to mellow instrumentals. The variation of Voodoo Chile is worth the whole disc. I was pleasantly suprised with this CD.
Wow!
Back in the 60's, I did not realize how great a blues guitarist that Jimi Hendrix was. . he was presented to us as an innovative "psychedelic" phenom, and after 35 years, this CD has shown me what I didn't realize before. . he could also play the blues. . could he play the blues! And I thought that I knew my music. . . I am humbled by the music on this CD. . . incredible!.
