Hiatt's best work from the 1970's. "Overcoats," however, offers up a handful of good songs which are similar to a style reminiscent of Chicago and Todd Rundgren. If you are a John Hiatt fan, you would probably most likely recognize his country material after the 1987 album, "Bring The Family" as his best work. I do not care for the entire ablum because honestly, some songs are quite weak for a talent like Hiatt. He does however manage to create a classic song with the title track, "Overcoats. " The first three songs on the album are enjoyable as well. The last song on the album seems to be showcasing Hiatt's earliest country compositions. Five good songs out of ten doesn't make this a horrible album, but it unfortunately does contain some filler. We would have to wait through John's new wave explorations like "Slug Line" and "Two Bit Monsters," before he would transition to a more traditional country/rock vein in the 1980's. Overall, this would be the one ablum I would consider having from the early days of John Hiatt.
