Another Great One From John Hiatt I love that my husband heard one of John Hiatt's songs on the radio in Dutch Harbor, Alaska and so I proceeded to find him and I purchased three of his cd's and now I plan on purchasing more. This is great music. I love his music. Thanks -Sara-.
An Absolute Must-Have!
Originally produced back in 1988 by Glyn Johns, this was always a pretty good sounding studio recording, and MFSL's GAIN 2 remastering process seems to have added a bit of lifelike texture to the music, making this disk a must-have for true-blue John Hiatt fans. I had a hard time containing my excitement when MFSL released my favorite recording by one of my favorite performers, John Hiatt. As a nice bonus, Hiatt wrote a short intro about the recording sessions and brief but revealing comments on the songs.
If you've never heard John Hiatt, then trust me--the puzzle of your life is missing a piece. He combines autobiographical insight with a wicked sense of humor, all wrapped up in an exuberance that is bound to win you over. Add the tasty guitar of Sonny Landreth and the rock-solid drumming of Ken Blevins, and you've got a heck of a gumbo--a little country, a little folk, a little hard rock, a little Memphis soul, and a whole lot of energy. The powerful performances and superlative sound make Slow Turning an absolute must-have, and if you can't find the MFSL version, the original A&M release is still awfully nice. .
Landmark Recording
John Hiatt is a national treasure. A perfect album, showcasing one of the greatest American singer/songwriters ever. The depth and breadth of this record is astounding. Such a magnificently varied group of songs are given the treatment they deserve. Hiatt's lyrics and vocals are truly unique and full of human emotion. The musicians are all superb, particularly the inimitable Sonny Landreth, whipsawing, squeezing, coaxing and conjuring all those incredible notes from his guitar.
This one should go in a time capsule. .
Like A "Slow Turning" Old Friend
This was my introduction to John Hiatt after I heard the uptempo rocker "Paper Thin" on the local radio station. John Hiatt's 1988 release "Slow Turning" is a hands down classic. I soon discovered that this CD was one solid set of songs that were easy to listen to all the way thru. I just happen to listen to this great album the other day on my iPod while driving back from a worksite with a group of co-workers. It had been awhile since I listened to this classic, and towards the end I remembered just how good it is.
The album kicks off with a few up-beat songs featuring great acoustic and electric guitars. John's backing band is very tight, with good production. "Icy Blue Heart" slows things down to a crawl, but what a great country-tinged ballad it is, telling the story of a couple who meet in a bar. I hadn't heard John's previous album to this, Bring the Family (1987), until recently. Many consider it his best, but I prefer Slow Turning because it rocks just a little more. The great songs just keep coming at you, and the beautiful closer "Feels Like Rain" is one of my favorite slow songs. It brings back memories of when I lived in Louisiana near New Orleans. If you listen to the song, you'll understand. If your thinkning of trying out some his music, you can't go wrong with this one.
*****Highly RECOMMENDED*****.
