Raw, Honest and Misunderstood
Live Through This chronicles several years of Courtney Love's life, from dating Kurt Cobain (Doll Parts), having Frances taken by child services (Plump), rape (Asking For It), domestic abuse (Jennifer's Body), to her falling short of society's expectations in general. This album is often perceived as a response to the death of Kurt Cobain, although many of the songs were written before the marriage, and certainly before the death. It's a triumph for feminism, and a memoir of survival in a very different time period.

A raw work of art from the "Grunge" era,
Alice In Chains had released "Jar of Flies" at the beginning of the year(debuted at #1 on Billboard 200). "Live Through This" was released on April 12, 1994 in the later days of "Grunge" mainstream success. Soundgarden's breakthrough success "Superunknown" hit shelves in March(debuted at #1 on Billboard 200). "Purple" was released on June 7th by the Stone Temple Pilots(debuted at #1 on Billboard 200), and in December, Pearl Jam released "Vitalogy"(the second-fastest-selling album of all time upon it's release, behind Pearl Jam's second album VS. ).

So how did Hole measure up among all the success of 1994? "Live Through This" debuted at #56 on the Billboard 200, eventually peaking at #52.

With that said, "Live Through This" just might be the best release of that year. It is a testament to raw female emotions that you can only get from a rock goddess like Courtney Love. Tragedy literally surrounded the release of this album. It was released just four days after Kurt Cobain was found dead, and shortly after it's release, bassist Kristen Pfaff was found dead from an accidental heroin overdose.
The album contains lyrics that come from a deep and dark place, and with a perfect mix of edgy punk riffs and pretty, understated chords, this album was destined to affect a human being. Courtney screams and growls in anger, yet at certain points she expresses the insecurities and traumas of a childhood that you can feel.

Whatever mood I may be in, or wherever my life takes me, I have constantly revisited "Live Through This" and I always will. Truely one of the greatest recordings in music history!

5 Stars!.

Best female driven album ever.
Even if you are not a fan of Courtney Love, overlook that and get this kickin' record. I can not say enough good things about this album. There isn't a single song on here I don't love and can't recite from memory if it's played on the radio. It's a classic, pure and simple. Also liked and would recommend: Celebrity Skin.

Live Through This
But the great songs are "great" making this a no brainer to have in your collection. Nice, loud and at times (later in the cd) a little tiresome.

An essential and epic time capsule
