Good Retreads of Holly Songs I was not disappointed. Being a Buddy Holly purist, I purchased this CD only because some of the reviews I read were good. The up to date arrangements of these Holly songs show how Buddy's songwriting has withstood the test of time. These "re-treads" or "re-makes" are not "covers" because "covers" were rushed at the time a record was released and other artists and record companies tried to capitalize on the expected success. Since Pat Dinizio's CD came along 50 years after Holly's death, in no way was he trying to "cover" Buddy in a race for the charts. For this reason, time was well spent in carefully working out the arrangements. The CD offers pleasant listening for even Holly purists like myself. .
Perfect Combo
In this CD Pat does more than just "cover" Buddy Holly. Pat has always paid tribute to his influences, especially Buddy Holly and the Beatles. He treats the material like a true fan and pulls off a perfect "new" but "can't ever be better than the original" combination. Found myself singing Pat's versions of the songs a few times. Pat is a true original and probably one of the hardest working stars in Rock and Roll. If you are a Pat Dinizio, Smithereens, or Buddy Holly fan you will not be disappointed.
Great album
Bought this album at the show (he even signed it), and I can't stop listening to Pat's version of "Doesn't Matter Anymore. Just saw Pat play this past Saturday in San Francisco, and he was once again great. ".
Great album!
Pat Dinizio has lovingly deconstructed and re-assembled these classic songs from one of the legends of rock n roll into 11 tracks that will make you re-appreciate the depths these songs can produce. This is not just a tribute album, or another attempt at The Smithereens front man to put out minimal effort and make some qick cash. The mixing of the strings/guiatar/drums is excellent, and the vocals are not overpowering. The melodies are right out there to hook you. If you are a Buddy Holly Fan, you must have this. If you are a Smithereens fan, you must have this. Likely will be one of the best albums of this year (in the top ten at least!).
Pat DiNizio Delivers More Brilliance
Many artists have contributed single tracks to previous Holly tribute compilations. Could there be any project more challenging and daunting than a recorded tribute to a legend inducted into the Rock 'N Roll Hall Of Fame as part of the first class (1986)? Those initial honorees included Elvis, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ray Charles, and, of course, Buddy Holly. Here, Mr. DiNizio bravely and brilliantly offers an entire album of his own carefully selected covers. They are stunning and absolutely, positively awesome. I can't pick a favorite. Other reviewers have gone into more detailed analysis for you. Whether it's solo or with the Smithereens, Pat DiNizio never fails to deliver a top-shelf product and result. His prodigious talents, accomplishments, visions, and continuing activities are truly amazing considering the current penchants and conditions found within the music industry. Thanks Pat for another superb recording and we greatly appreciate your remarkable commitment to the fan base.
