From Levitation To Boring....... So I would consider myself to be a fan. First of all, I have everything that Bruce has ever recorded. But this CD is just plain a complete bore. Actually, it is overwritten and it should have been a short story rather than a musical event. He goes on and on with the lyrics, so from a musical point-of-view, it is just plain disappointing. So Bruce, but this time around, this one just bites the dust.
Bruce Hornsby Still At The Top of His Game!
I've been a fan of the incredibly talented Mr. What a great album. Hornsby for a long time. "Black Rats of London" starts the album well and "Cyclone" has a kind of upbeat but eerie feel to it; albeit the beginning strains sound strangly like another Hornsby song from the past - but who cares! As always, Hornsby's music only grows and grows on me, unlike other pop drivel which is so commonly played on the radio. A good purchase for Hornsby fans!.
What's going on
I am finding it more & more difficult to like what Bruce is doing now, not the best, just got keep playing it, perhaps it will make sence then.
Uneven Delivery
I remember appreciating his strong voice, incredible piano stylings and socially conscious lyrics. As a casual fan of Bruce Hornsby's work from the late 80's I had no preconceived notions about what his latest release might offer. I must say, however, based on what I liked about vintage Hornsby led me to believe this CD would be much more enjoyable than it is.
The opening song suggests a promising experience; " The Black Rats of London" has a Scotch/Irish vibe, inspiring one to get up and perform an energetic jig. Things, unfortunately, quickly take a turn for the worse. "Prairie Dog Town" is passable, "Cyclone" is lyrically engaging, if somewhat depressing. The fourth song, however, "Continents Drift", is truly insufferable. Seven plus minutes of poorly constructed similies (a couple as continents, drifting together, then apart), uninspired music. . . . . a completely self-indulgent piece of music. Truly bad.
While "Continents. . . . . " is dreadful to the ears, nothing compares to the next track for questionable, dare I say tasteless, lyrics. "Paperboy" chronicles a day in the life of a serial killer. . . . whom also happens to be a cannibal. A very odd song, indeed.
"Levitate" and " Simple Prayer" are two songs that have some redeemable qualities. The lyrics for "Simple Prayer" are quite clever. . . . . but surely it can be downloaded instead of having to endure the remainder of the CD.
The past twenty years have not been kind, in any regard, to Hornsby's artistry. His voice is considerably weaker than it was early in his career, a phenomenon that is, to be fair, not that unusual. He is now collaborating with several partners to produce lyrics that range from disappointing ("Here We Are Again) to downright creepy ("Paperboy"). The musicanship is still a showcase of talent, although some of the songs contain chord changes that sound. . . . . off kilter. Unexpected chords can be a welcomed creative addition, but Hornsby and Co. fail to meander in interesting directions. The chord changes just kind of fall off a cliff.
There are several other artists (Monsters of Folk, Dylan, David Gray) who currently have new releases. Check them out, skip this, save the time and money.

The end of the beginning?
I don't appreciate "Levitate" 'cos there's none standout tracks at all. . The previously effort by bruce h. "halcyon days" worked well but not this one. I really prefer songs like Mandolin Rain, Lost Soul, Country Doctor, Shadow Hand or Dreamland from ancient cds. From "Levitate" even the lyrics are not fine. Hope that Bruce will release a new one (not only for his twin sons can rap on it) but for his audience. . . christophe (a french fan).
