heart brittle as a bottle i keep lending out my CD of "People" out to my friends and it never comes back!
an earlier review compares the music lyrics with that of bruce springsteen, and it's absoultely true, and if you love the lyrics of natalie merchant, tracy chapman and springsteen, take this cd home with you. of the three hothouse flower titles that i've owned, this first one seems to have the most passionate music. i'm buying two copies, so the next one i lend out.
A sweaty and uplifting soul rocker
Lead singer Liam O' Maonlai reminds me of Wilson Pickett, Joe Cocker and Leon Russell. Should it surprise anyone that the best American sixties soul music of 1989 doesn't come from American, but from the Irish band Hothouse Flowers? Well, considering Ireland is the home of Van Morrison and U2, while we (America) got stuck with Mariah Carey, it doesn't shock me a bit. He sings with so much energy that I expected him to explode at any minute. On `I'm Sorry,` `Yes I Was' and `Feet On The Ground,' the band takes a hardcore soul stance, turns it inside out, upside down, them rocks it harder than Jerry Lee Lewis pounds the piano. `If You Go' and `Ballad Of Katie' remind me of Bruce Springsteen - maybe it's the mysterious edge-of-town saxophone work, or perhaps the narrative introductions. And the back-up girls (I'm Sorry, Feet On The Ground) pour out the sweetest soul harmonies. People is a sweaty, uplifting soul rocker.
Probably their best album and well worth getting
O'Maolai puts some great songs together I'm Sorry and Love Don't work this way are songs that will get stuck in your head and keep you singing all day. The song that really sticks out on this album is Don't Go for those that know what the Eurovision is will remember a great performance by the Flowers and the finale was this. An excellent album well worth having.
