Iced Earth Band: Iced Earth
Title: Tribute to the Gods
Rating:
Release Date: 2002-11-12
Media: Audio CD

Tracks: 1: Creatures Of The Night (Kiss) 2: The Number Of The Beast (Iron Maiden) 3: Highway To Hell (AC/DC) 4: Burnin' For You (Blue Oyster Cult) 5: God Of Thunder (Kiss) 6: Screaming For Vengeance (Judas Priest) 7: Dead Babies (Alice Cooper) 8: Cities On Flame (Blue Oyster Cult) 9: It's A Long Way To The Top (AC/DC) 10: Black Sabbath (Black Sabbath) 11: Hallowed Be Thy Name (Iron Maiden)

Mostly good but...
I think on these they tried to make them their own and something new but in this case, that isn't a good thing. there are a couple songs here, most noticably "Number of the Beast" that Iced Earth totally butcher to hell. Number has a great riff on it and you can't even here it. It's less melodic and the only good part is Barlow to be honest. I don't know what Schaeffer was thinking here.

Outside of that though, it's mostly a good tribute. The standouts to me are the Kiss tracks because to me, Barlow has an unbelievably similar voice to Paul Stanley which is something I never really realized until this album which I find quite interesting. The other standouts are the final two tracks that are "Black Sabbath" and "Hallow be thy Name" probably because they're epics and Iced Earth is known for their great epics.

Overall, I recommend this cd. While it is definitely not Iced Earth's best or the best tribute CD I have, it is worth it, just be warned about hearing some butchering on a couple of tracks.

What the Gods deserve
Iced Earth presents tributes to the biggest bands ever. When I listened to these covers I couldn't believe my ears. The idea of playing covers is to give them a particular touch given by the band that plays the tributes. That's why the songs don't sound the same as played originally. But still, Iced Earth respects the name and history of these musical groups like Kiss which is the band I love the most, and I know for sure that the highest band in the world is honored.

Pretty damn good cover album!
I have to say that rarely will I check out a cover album, yet alone buy one, but this one I wish I got sooner!! Iced Earth covers mostly 70s & early 80s tunes but they give these tracks a modern day heavy & raw sound which is nice! They are not trying to perfectly copy the original version of the songs & it sounds like Iced Earth playing them! Definitely cool if you want an upbeat metal album that also gives you a musical history lesson!.

ICED EARTH KICKS SERIOUS ASS.....BUT
THESE SONGS THEY HAVE CHOSEN TO COVER ARENT ALL GOOD. . . THE IRON MAIDEN AND PRIEST IS GOOD, BUT THE REST JUST ISNT.

Not very good, unless...
At least this singer is able to get most of the lyrics across in an intelligible manner, but it's a disservice to these songs to growl them out. Not very good, unless you like that low growl voice that doesn't seem to take much talent to generate. Your own stuff, OK, but not these classics.
