I want to like her.....but.......zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzMy head says I should like this cd, but my heart doesn't agree. . . quite frankly. . . . this is pretty boring stuff. . . . it's typcial Early 2000's fare. . . . so-called "serious" lyrics with a folk rock slant. . . . . I like the light and airy sound of "Wrong Impression" and I wish she'd have tried to not take herself so seriously. . . . . . this cd doesn't have anything as annoying as "Torn", but it doesn't have anything that memorable. . . . . I hope Ms. Imbruglia tries it again. . . . . she has a lovely voice and somehow I think I'll give her another chance if she records again.
Sophomore album avoids the slump
. . I have to say that this is a solid second outing for Natalie.
The sound of the album follows that of "Left of Middle", with ringing guitars, layers of sound and the lyrical work that's far deeper than it sounds at first listen. If you liked "Torn" and "Smoke" from "Left of Middle", there's a lot to like on "White Lilies Island".
The first single kicks off the album, and it's a doozy. "That Day" reads like a diary entry, it was said, and it really does. It takes time to acclimatize to its quirky structure, but it will grow on you. It grew on me pretty quickly. "Beauty on the Fire" and "Satellite" are strong tunes, and while "Do You Love" (NOT "Do You Love Me") may sound like a dragging love song, it's not. Some would consider it Top 40 trash, but it's turned into my favorite track. "Wrong Impression" is the second single, and the CD's material remains strong all the way to the end. "Butterflies", in particular, is interesting as far as lyrics go. Try to figure out what the butterflies stand for, after appreciating the pretty melody and stellar guitar work.
Bottom Line: Great buy, excellent female vocal rock album. Haven't heard one this good since Dido's "No Angel".
Surprisingly good
I was about to write her off as a one-hit wonder but that all changed when I heard the first single off her new album "White Lilies Island", called "Wrong Impression". I'll admit that I was one of Natalie's detractors when "Torn" was played into the ground a few years ago. The song itself is even catchier than "Torn", a song I once loved but grew tired of. When I heard the entire album I was definitely a changed person. This album has definitely altered my perception and attitude towards Natalie. I absolutely adore this album. Every song on this album just impressed me so much that I have completely forgiven Natalie for "Torn". "Everything Goes" is a perhaps my favorite ballad on this album. It's quiet, subdued, and emotional. The opening riffs to "Hurricane" definitely has some Garbage influences in the first few seconds, as does the following track "Sunlight". Apparently Natalie has been listening to a lot of Garbage and maybe Joydrop with that same electronic/rock vibe. "That Day" and "Beauty on Fire" is an excellent way to open up the album. There were even moments when Natalie's vocals sounded a bit like Ani Difranco. "Goodbye" is a stunning ballad that is just as good as "Everything Goes". None of the tracks on this album sounds anything like "Torn" which is a good thing. My only flaw with this album is that I can't play it on my computer at work which really annoys me to no ends of the earth (thank you very much RCA Records). Nevertheless I love this album. I'm not going to give it up just because I can't listen to it on my computer at work.
Its a Marvel
This a marvelous CD. First of all im a Natalie Imbruglia huge fan, but im going to be very objective on this review. And for you guys outside US dont panic if you dont like That day because the 11 other songs have nothing in common with the first track. I have to say that my favourites songs from WLI are Satellite, Come September, Beauty on the Fire and That day. I kind of dislike Sunlight and Hurricane, i really dont get that songs.
And talking about Wrong Impression, many people say that thats the best track, but i disagree. I think that song is nice, happy, its video is good, but its too radio-like, so its easy to be tire of that song quickly.
Not an Audio CD!
It doesn't conform to the CD-Digital Audio standard, and is not an Audio CD. This CD is "copy protected" by the Cactus Data Shield. For me, it was unlistenable on my computers AND my discman; listening to it on a friends machine, it sounded good, but I returned it as defective. Very disappointing.
