Back in the Day
I went to summer camp with Jack and first started hearing his music there. this is Jack's first album from way back when. I remember when this album came out and in his "Thank Yous" he list tons of old camp friends. Jack is a little rough and raw, but that is what makes him so great. A must for any music fan.

Singer songwriter with boring songs = bad album
This album has boring songs. I hate to be the one to say it, but the emperor has no clothes on. I listen to plenty of TExas singer songwrither stuff and this particular album should be avoided. I think maybe people like it because of the first and last songs. The first, "Beat up Ford" is Ingram's best on the CD. Its a good driving song, while it doesn't make perfect sense, does rate a B+. The last song on the CD is the best song, but it is a cover of a REK nugget. In the middle is a straight cover of Waylon's "Mama Tried". This was a big bar tune in my younger day, but listening to it here really makes me wonder why it is played at such an uptempo. The singer is convicted to life imprisonment at age 20 - where is the joy in that? A lost opportunity here to reinterpret a song I have heard a 1000 times. Interspersed around these tunes is where the meat of the CD should be, but isn't. Ingram's songs are boring and unremarkable. I challenge anyone who gives this 5 stars to find an insight in any of the other songs.

There is a Willie Nelson song in there, but it can't save the CD. Logically, a singer songwriter should have a bunch of good songs on his album or what is the point? Since this is the only Ingram record I have listened to carefully, I can't say if this is an aberration. I love his song "Mustang Burn" so maybe that album is better, but these songs are boring!.

It holds up
This one in particular. Jack Ingram's music makes me happy. While other records of his are countrier, louder, even funnier, this is one I return to often. It's consistently good, start to finish, and he can't help but quietly show off his good taste, such as when he covers Willie Nelson's "Pick Up the Tempo" or Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried. " One of my favorite records, and as usual for Jack Ingram, it's prime driving music.

GRRRRREAT!
i think he is really good. i go to camp longhorn (4th term), and each summer jack ingram plays a couple of songs for us at campfire. usually i don't like country (i'm more into bon jovi and eve 6) but this guy is an exception. he has talent that surpasses that of any performer i have ever seen before. i recommend this because it's excellent. Country for the non-country fan
This CD is the roots of a someone who appears to be making it big. By and large, I am not a country fan - generally I like Emmy Lou Harris, the Dixie Chicks (new and old), Patsy Cline AND Jack Ingram. Mama Tried is a great interpretation and I really like Merle Haggard's original and the Grateful Dead' version, so he had to do it well. The Road Goes on Forever is a masterpiece. Jack Ingram and this CD is country, folk, Texas and just plain enjoyable to listen too.
