Focused filters . Still one of the better introductive indie rock releases of the decade, guided by a boldly assertive streak of beginning tracks, Interpol's debut avoids a conscious songwriting strain early success brought with future output, instead providing more effortlessly angular, darkened pop, properly emulating the oft-milked Joy Division prototype.
A hauntingly atmospheric experience if you let yourself be immersed in its brilliance
Yes, Interpol has some similarities to Ian Curtis' outfit of nearly three decades ago. Frankly, I do not understand the Joy Division fanboys. Why is that considered to be a fault? Isn't it great that some modern bands (including the boys at Interpol Bloc Party, and Editors) are trying to emulate the brilliance of Joy Division rather than become another band tailoring their musical prowess towards prepubescent girls? I think Ian Curtis would be flattered to see the impact his band had on music. If you really cannot let go of the past, why are you buying new music at all? You obviously purchased this record because you wanted to experience what you loved about the dark sound of JD again, but for some reason you are complaining because they DO indeed radiate a similar vibe.
Now then, to the album. The first thing you should know is that this album is a grower--very much so, in fact. I was left lukewarm after the first listen, so don't be alarmed if that happens to you. Interpol's music has real depth and it is difficult to appreciate all the layers the first time around. Give it at least 3-5 spins before deciding if it works for you. I would recommend you use decent headphones to catch all the subtleties of the record, since a lot of them are lost on a stereo system.
Also, keep in mind that the album works best as a total experience--from Untitled to Leif Erickson, the album is meant to be listened to as a complete work. While individual songs can feel a little incomplete at times, this is truly an instance of the whole being more than the sum of its parts.
Lastly, do yourself a favor and take this for a walk at night--just you and the album, no distractions. I found that this creates an unparalleled atmosphere and accentuates the album's dark brilliance beautifully. .
New York NewWave Re-Invented
i was intorduced to them by a friend back in 2002. man, i love this band! i saw them live in nashville a few years ago, they ripped the house apart. a re-invention of NewWave does not get any better than this. the only bands that can compete are the Killers and the Strokes. Interpol took new york back to its roots of the late 70s & early 80s when things were all about the CBGB scene & style. . . . . . . . if you can dig, then dig it all, my love my Interpol. Punk once again meets NewWave or should i dare say Neo-NewWave.

One of the few original bands!!
Interpol! is one of the few bands that still have the desire to make good music for their fans and nopt, just to sell cds! the quality of the guitasrs is outstanding!! .
It's like being "in" on something secret and great....
The first cut I heard was Obstacle 2. This is HANDS DOWN one of the greatest cd's I've EVER heard. . . I'd never heard anything like it. . . I don't have a musical vocabulary, but I knew right away that this was incredibly deep, substantial music making, so unlike the trash one hears on most radio stations. This song takes what I'd call musical "risks". . . I mean, either you're gonna LOVE it, or you're gonna think they are nuts. I, for one, LOVE it. I have always liked alternative music, since the late 70s, early 80s. . . I'm so glad that there are still intelligent, passionate musicians who can make you forget your problems for 70+ minutes. As other's have noted, there isn't a bad song here, nothing to skip, or fast forward to, but many songs to "repeat". The cream of the crop to me, are Untitled. . . moody, dark and brooding; PDA comes at you at a frantic pace, never lets go; Hands Away is sad in a good way, the way Depeche Mode could pull off. Very simple guitar work which becomes more complicated and revelatory as the song continues; The New. . . I don't know what to say. I'm out of words. This cd is a revelation. "Antics" and "Interpol" are also amazing pieces of musical genius. Don't hesitate. .
