older 80's style music, solid. actually, it's pretty much totally awesome. this album is well balanced and has quite a few good tracks on it. favorite track on this cd 'johnson's aeroplane'. .
If it's not their best, its very close
Many of their New Wave quirks would be smoothed over by the time of 'Listen Like Thieves', but here the synths, bass and drum beats still take centre stage. In some ways, 'The Swing' marks a turning point for INXS, being the last of their albums to have a clear New Wave influence. On one hand 'The Swing' continues the shift toward a more direct rock sound that started with 'Shabooh Shoobah', but by capturing the band in transition it is also one of their most diverse and interesting albums. It's important not to downplay what INXS achieved in their early years: Aussie pub rock, arty New Wave and white man's funk have little in common, but INXS was able to bring them all together into a coherent whole. And 'The Swing' showcases this better than any of their albums.
There really is something for everyone here. 'Original Sin' is one of their best ever songs, with a funky bass line, memorable synth/guitar riff, and socially-relevant lyrics. This and 'Burn For You' showcase the band adopting a slightly rawer, harder-edged sound. At the other extreme, the synth-heavy 'Johnson's Aeroplane' is the oddest, artiest song here, while 'I Send a Message' sounds a bit like a funky update of Kraftwerk. And while INXS were never a "political" band, the lyrics are more serious and thoughtful than before: 'Dancing On The Jetty' and 'Original Sin' are probably two of the most explicit attempts at social commentary they ever produced.
Several songs became hits, but the best thing about this album is its consistency. Although some songs are more accessible than others, nearly every song is memorable in its own way. They only really ever achieved this level of consistency again with 'Kick', meaning 'The Swing' ranks right up there as one of INXS' best ever albums. .
Their first consistently great album
Overall, this is their best album before they went mega with KICK. Front to back there's not a weak track. LISTEN LIKE THIEVES had two good songs and one killer ("What You Need") but the rest of the album didn't click. Their earliest albums are kind of limp save for a few choice exceptions. But THE SWING is a party and holds up very well today - that is, if you go for top-notch New Wave dance music. This stuff is so infectious. The sound is crisp with high highs and low lows. One of the catchiest, most fun synth-pop-rock albums of the 80's. .
One of the Best from INXS
I had to replace my worn out tape because this is a collection of songs I find I can listen non stop to over and over again without skipping around. I was very happy to find this in CD format. I have always been a huge Michael Hutchence and INXS fan and all the songs on "The Swing" are favorites of mine.
If you are an INXS fan or an 80's person who remembers their great music, or even a new fan get this! .
Inxs revisited
Yes, I still had the cassettes. Having been a teenager in the 80's and a big Inxs fan, I decided to rebuild my collection. It had been quite awhile since I'd listened to this cd and I was really pleased all over again. The music stands up to the test of time, still relevant and still fantastically made. I prefer the earlier Inxs years and am not disappointed. Even some of my teenaged sons friends are enjoying it!.
