Best be your own judge
The reviews of this disc are all over the musical map. . . But , that is the pleasure of music. Listen to it , and determine your own opinion. I , for one , like the explorations initiated on this album. "In the Garden of Eden" was far behind them , and they were trying to expand their sound. In that context , it is a rather enjoyable album.

great songwriting

Scorching Beauty is a perfect example of that. In a previous review for an Iron Butterfly album, I wrote that the band was very good with the songwriting aspect of the music, even when the psychedelic elements have been all but lost. It's focused entirely of songs that are written in a pleasant, but distinct, style. It resembles closely that of the Marshall Tucker Band in some spots, no joke. Again, the songwriting is where it counts- if the songs aren't any good the album is bad. Simple as that. However, this is NOT the case with Scorching Beauty.

"Pearly Gates" is emotionally devastating the way the singer pours his honest emotions in the lyrics, and the quick pace of the keyboard playing is really something special on this track. I highly recommend this album to complete your Iron Butterfly collection. Care about the songwriting above everything else and you'll be fine.

Yes, I KNOW there's thousands of people out there who have a problem with this version of Iron Butterfly and claim it's nothing compared to the earlier, groundbreaking version of the band (now known as a major influence in gutiar jams).

I personally love the music the band was creating at this moment in time a LITTLE too much. Just listen to a song like "Pearly Gates" and pay attention to that splendid vocal melody. WONDERFUL vocal melody. The vocal melody kind of swirls around a bit, but constructing a melody like that feels a bit daring compared to music nowadays. In fact, most bands today wouldn't be able to write a melody like that without screwing it up and making it sound annoying in some way.

I just love singing along to it. "It ain't fa-a-air what they're doin' down theeee-e-e-re". Just a really good melody with a great vibe and special consideration for honest feelings. . . THIS is why Iron Butterfly was such a great band. .

Great album
Worth the money. I have no idea why this albums is getting slammed on here, this may not be true Iron Butterfly, but it's still a good listen.

Not really Iron Butterfly, but
Having said that, the guitarist doesn't play the same style or really have the same sound that he did when originally with IB. The only connection with Iron Butterfly Is the fact that the one time guitarist and the drummer are on this. Also IB was Doug Ingles Baby, he wrote most of the stuff, sang and arranged them. They tended to have loads of upfront organ also. Erik should definitely left the singing to someone else, it isn't very good and not in a bad but good way. It just sounds strained and, well not rocky/bluesy enough. The songs are OK without really being classics and overall the feel is of a solo album with guests. You can go to Go for a download of this and Sun and Steel, you don't really need them. I got them, but except for an occasional dust down, they sit right at the back of my IB collection. They are like the runts of the litter, think of the last Bad Company album, or Genesis Calling all Stations, or In the Hot Seat by ELP. If you are a true fan you gotta get em and then weep. If not, forget then, your life is complete without them.

Wouldn't pay too much for it
But, I wouldn't go out and pay a big import price to get it. This album isn't as terrible as people may say. I have this one on vinyl myself. The problem with the later Butterfly is that Eric Brann's vocals are lacking and weak. Personally, I prefer sun and steel to this one.
