Scream for me Long Beach... It absolutely fits the criteria of any essential concert recording: historical importance (check), a healthy dose of classics and album cuts (double check) and although the live versions may not top their studio originals, the contest is a wash. `Live After Death' is easily the best live album of the mid-Eighties and one of the greatest of an era, period. Maiden had just finished their mammoth `World Slavery Tour' and in doing so had solidified their position as the most popular heavy metal band on the planet. The band would certainly never headline such venues as Long Beach Area (where much of the double LP was recorded) or Madison Square Garden for up to three and four consecutive nights as their popularity in the US was also at an all-time high which was astonishing as they virtually no radio play unless you counted late night metal shows (much like Metallica until the `90's). `Death' opens with the stirringly patriotic "Churchill's Speech" (this always moves me and heck I'm not even British!) which segways perfectly into "Aces High". Most of the classics from the band's first five albums are on display though the Long Beach portion, which dominates, is mostly from the Dickinson era (and rightfully so). "Revelations" (with a curious expletive shouted at the end, Nicko?), "The Trooper", "Number of the Beast", "Flight of Icarus", "Hallowed Be Thy Name", "2 Minutes to Midnight" and even "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" get full workouts. "Running Free" is the audience participation workout and gets suitably stretched. I saw this show in Providence in May of 1985 so this record is very special to me. Maiden was on top of the metal heap in 1985 and `Life After Death' is a testament to that. . . this ain't no hair metal!.
MAIDEN'S 2ND BEST LIVE CD
but "BEAST OVER HAMMERSMITH" from EDDIE'S ARCIVE box set has to be the single best performance of the band's entire career. yes it is great and will always be the maiden live album that all their live albums will be measured by.
Very Short Review
Maiden is one of the(if not *the*) best NWOBHM bands from the 80s. Let's not get too long-winded. This live CD, in my opinion, captures all of their first, best and most important albums. Of course, Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son were excellent in their own right, but for me Iron Maiden changed a bit after Powerslave (their last truly epic and flawless album).
So this live CD incorporates everything from their catalogue up to & including Powerslve. The reason this live CD is so amazing is that the production, vocals and all around sound are all even BETTER than the studio recordings! I don't know know how they pulled this off, but listen to songs from Powerslave and Live After Death back to back. The live album is truly superior.
I tend to shy away from live albums mostly due to shotty production & a kind of feeling like the consumer is being sodmomized by big record labels just to make a buck.
This CD is *a MUST* for any Iron Maiden fan. Best live album I've ever heard in my life & what is better than hearing the best metal band playing their best live show at the height of their best era??
I said *BUY IT*
:).
Maiden LIVE!!!!!
SSCRRRREEEAAAMMMM FOR ME LONG BEACH !!!!! SSCRRRRREEEEEEAAAAMMMM FOR ME !!! I have waited for a live album to make me think of a bootleg and no one has given me that simple pleasure. . until THIS album! KISS ALIVE in the 70's,LIVE AFTER DEATH in the 80's! The only live album that could possibly top this is ROCK IN RIO. Again,by Maiden. And that one is for the 00's. This is the best live band around and always will be! They are tight and flawless. Nikko McBrain is a true thunder God, Steve Harris, the best hard rock/metal bass player there is. Adrian Smith,,and Dave Murry will rip your head off with they're guitar styles and solos. And Bruce Dickenson, well, what can you say that has'nt been said already? Outstanding vocalist! .
excited!
My boyfriend was so happy to get this CD for Valentines Day! He listens to it all the time!!!.
