average maiden
i really think they got back into form after their "brave new world" album. i'm a big iron maiden fan, and while i do have all their studio albums,i have to say out of all of them, this has to be their least inspired. so if your looking for sweeping epic maiden songs you won't really find them on this album. it is at best just an average rock album.

Better than the reunion albums...I think!
The songs on the reunion albums are cool and progressive and that's great, but they sound the same to me a lot of the time and don't have the same atmosphere of the CLASSIC Maiden albums, of which the last two albums Bruce made with the band before the reunion are worthy of being called! . I can't believe the reunion albums have higher ratings than No Prayer and Fear O' the Dark! To any Maiden fan or anyone just getting into Maiden bypass the reunion albums and get these two first (after you get the stuff from the 80's)! Both No Prayer and Fear of the dark are 4 stars in my opinion.

Plenty bad preachers...
Janick Gers was brought in and while many feel Maiden skipped a beat here, I personally don't have a lot of bad things to say about the resulting album, `No Prayer for the Dying'. Iron Maiden may have seemed to have hit a rut after their commercial and artistic peak of the mid-Eighties by the time co-lead guitarist Adrian Smith left the band in 1990. It is a back to basics, stripped down record as many have said and is comparatively short compared to previous classics. While it may not be earth shatteringly innovative, `No Prayer' does have its share of if not classics then very very good songs including the one-two punch of opener "Tailgunner" and "Holy Smoke". While the latter may seem redundant as the subject was already covered in the classic "Aces High" that doesn't make it a bad song while the latter is another superb attack on organized religion and its hypocrisy (as they in turn attacked heavy metal!). The video for "Holy Smoke" is also a stripped down affair as the band rehearses at Steve's house (where the album was recorded) mixed with scenes of Bruce goofing around in a cornfield. "Bring Your Daughter" was a number single in Britain and while not one of Maiden's greatest it is still darn and the "let her go, let her go, LET HER GO!" part of the chorus is goose bump raising. Other faves include the one lone song written by the departing Adrian "Hooks in You", "Fates Warning" and "Public Enema Number One". Again not a classic Maiden record but for the early nineties (a time period when classic metal was on the wane) it was good to hear a real metal band flexing their muscles and getting down to business as usual. Be the devil or be it him!.

Regressive Metal
Tthe first song "Tailgunner" is the only gem, the rest of the album doesn't have the classic Maiden sound, with the time changes, and guitar solos that turn into full band instrumentals. This album could have been done by any of the other metal bands that were around at the same time. It's hard to imagine it being the same band that did Powerslave, Piece Of Mind, or Number Of The Beast. Just my opinion. .

The End Of Maidens Golden Era.
Unfortunately 1990 and the release of "No Prayer. Iron Maiden released seven (eight if you count the live "Live After Death")classic metal albums in the '80s. . . " marked the end of their golden era. This is just an uninspired album which is really shocking considering how complex Maidens music was prior to this. Gone are the epic progressive tracks with the exception of the subpar "Mother Russia". There are a few bright spots like "Tailgunner" which is a great track as well as "Hooks in You" which really rocks but after that there's not much. "Holy Smoke" is so below Maiden's standard that I don't know whether to laugh or cry. And why are they naming a song "Public ENEMA #1"? Not what you would expect from Maiden. Sounds like a song title for a joke band like Blink 182 or Papa Roach. No doubt there was turmoil within the band as evidenced by Adrian Smith's departure after "SSOASS" and Bruce Dickinson's solo album released earlier in 1990, which is very good by the way, and his eventual departure from the band a couple of years later. I can only guess that had something to do with this inferior release. In other words listening to this CD for the first time was like watching Dan Marino's and Joe Montana's last seasons in the NFL; sad, because you knew the best days were gone for true legends.
