Love this. After 2 songs I thought "wow he sounds like Roy Orbison" and then he covered the Roy O song. I really love this album. On this disc, Isaak has overtones of Orbison and Presley, with a dose of beached and sad in a southern resort. I know, it sounds like a wine review. Ha ha. I love wine too.
Kick Back, Put Your Toes In The Sand & Relax
I have to say that although Chris Isaak always puts out a good CD, this has to be one of his best. Wow, What a relaxing CD to listen to. The 'king of the reverb' trades it in this time on a more relaxed feel by giving some of his past songs an "acoustic" treatment. And it works very well. In fact I'd love for him to put out another CD like this one. But as of this writing he's just recently finaly released his first CD of all new material in seven years. That CD: "MR. LUCKY" is also a first rate 5 star album. A very solid CD more in his trademark 'reverb' sound. "BAJA SESSIONS" is the CD you want to put on when you have an ice-cold drink and just need to chill-out a little. Even if you don't have a cold drink, you can still relax & unwind to the mellow sounds of this CD. It might be best to have some warm sand to put your toes into also! You'll enjoy this CD highly. .
SONGS TO SHORT ......REALLY SHORT
That is the problem with CHRIS ISAAK. . all his songs are way to short. People wonder why chris isn't known as well or his songs. . . . BUT how does anybody remeber 2 minute songs???? Just when he gets a great beat and chorus song started and your really into it. . . POW. . . . it's over. This keeps his songs from being big hits. . . . thus. . . his name. He writes great songs. . but there half finished. This album is good. . . BUT IT IS HALF of A ALBUM. And it is typical of his STYLE. I have listen too 3 of his albums at least 20 times and I can't get a SONG in my head. WAY TO SHORT. I paid full price for CHRIS's abums. . . . . . NOW GIVE ME FULL "songs".
Baja Sessions
The album has a few covers "Only the Lonely", "South of the Border (Down Mexico Way)" , "Yellow Bird" . Baja Sessions being Isaak's 1996 release was an album mostly featuring accoustic arrangements. Isaak has some incredible vocal skills and he is a modern Elvis. The booklet is alright with some ok photos of Isaak. There are no lyrics included but we get a list of whom plays what on the album. 4/5.
3 stars when compared to his other work only
Many of the songs on this CD are different renditions of songs on earlier CDs, and they aren't as good. I don't know how others feel, but I do not care for an artist redoing old songs and passing them off as new. . . the version of "Wrong To Love You" on this is so limpid as to be sleep-inducing when compared to the strength of the original.
Frankly, it is still a good CD, but NOT when compared to the originality of earlier work. Buy it to complete your collection, and for the few new Chris Isaak songs on it, but don't expect greatness.
