The Isley's Redeux Even though I was not keen on much new music from the mid 90's right as it was coming out I wanted to have some Isley Brothers in my collection so,interestingly enough this is the first album I owned by them and the first time I actually heard any of their music to my knowledge. When this album was released it first came to my attention as a featured selection when I was a member of a record club. Not only did this obviously wet my appetite for more of their music but actually increased my opinion of the music of that time which, for the most part I'd grown discussted with because of how samey it was becomming. Musically speaking this album,in fact couldn't be more of it's era:the loud bass almost over-modulates heavy in the equalization, the beats don't go very far outside the same basic drum machine hip-hop/shuffle throughout and some of the backup singing is very clipped but at the same time it's really well done and very irresistable. That owes itself strongly to the strong songwriting from Angela Winbush and the actually pretty significant contributions on guitar from the now returned Ernie Isley. Generally speaking this is sort of an extended suite composed of individual songs that focus on the bedroom side of the Isley's,along with the human emotional expression in and around them. It's a territory the Isley's had dealt with for years and had come to their most mature on. And they still had the energy and the passion to make it work. Interesting enough for the very single oriented R&B landscape it was released in this CD actually works more as a whole than as seperate parts, especially as much of the music doesn't variate that much from song to song. There are some highlites though "Float On Your Love" is easily one of them as is the somewhat more rhythmic title song and "Let's Lay Together". Considering how jazzy Ernie's solo's are on this set it's nice on that one to hear him rocking out a little on the intro, even if just for old times sake. During the era, even today when it's nearly impossible to have a hit R&B album without some hip-hop influence the Isley's managed to ride it out by combining their own style and most importantly MUSICAL FLAVORS into the new environment and, especially in this case succeeded brilliantly.
A TRUE PLEASER
So here comes Robert Kelly, Babyface, Angella Winbush and Keith Sweat, therefore without question the result is another splendid album!!. The Isley Brothres are truly blessed, because of the fine quality of work issued over the decades, many of the young singers/ producers of today are inspired by and are eager to work with them. "Floatin' on your love" and "mission to please" got good uptempo beats covered by sensual lyrics. "Whenever you're ready",& "make your body sing" is certain to turn you on!!. how about "tears"? one of the most sentimental songs ever!. "Let's lay together" and "let's get intimate" plus "slow is the way" is the icing on this Isleys cake!!. Whether you are a seasoned fan, or new to the Isleys, i suggest this pleasing album to you. You're gonna love it!!
I wonder, why the hard work? so many years? so many excellent albums? so many gleaming songs?. Who are the Isleys really trying to please?. I know i'm done pleased among million of fans. I think are they trying to please LADY MUSIC!!!, but she can never ever be pleased, because she can be your DEMON or your ANGEL, your SAINT or your HARLOT, your JOY or your FAUSTRATION!!!!. This is what I believe!!. .
Great!
I loved every single on this record and listen to it daily. By far one of the best records out there.
This is a must have for any collection.
It pleases the senses!!!!!!
It was accomplished, when I heard this album. Mission to Please definitely is not a mission. The Isley Brothers never disappoint when it comes to baby making music. My favorite songs on this album are Mission to Please, Make your Body Sings, and Let's get Intimate. This album is a classic. It will please you in every way.
Grown Folks Music
What does this young buck know about the Isley Brothers. I know what you are thinking. Dont even play with me like that. I grew up listening to the godfathers of R&B so Im going to give them credit where credit is due. This is one of my favorite albums from the Isley Brothers. Songs like WHENEVER YOU'RE READY, LET'S LAY TOGETHER, TEARS, MISSION TO PLEASE YOU, HOLDING BACK THE YEARS(great cover of the old Simply Red classic), MAKE YOUR BODY SING and LET'S GET IMTIMATE show you that they still have it in them to make quality music after all these years. Bottom Line: This is another classic you can listen to from beginning to end without skipping songs. The Isley Brothers show that they can stlli make a solid album after all their years in the game. How many of the artists that they have inspired in the game can do that?.
