Janet's Artistic Endeavor Unveils!
It's a venture to the unknown where each song takes you on a journey maybe to another planet, a magical sensation or a typical "Janet" moment exploring sexual desires and fantasies. This is a new out of this world experience album with creativity, artistic expression, and much unexplored territory by Janet. While the album has its natural flaws on the whole it's a genuine masterpiece of innovative, funky new vibes of styles incorporating some futuristic themes, electronica enhancements, along dance, R&B and pop sounds!

While the songs are mainly geared towards the themes of love they maintain positive vibes, sensual undertones, creative metaphorical styles as well as uplifting energizing dance electronica hints definitely never seen before on any of her previous albums. The songs flow nicely with much up-tempo styles until you reach the middle where it simmers down to mellow R&B jams definitely on the moods to perhaps get down with your lover or just light some candles and reminisce.

Missy Elliott makes her presence known on the track "The 1" opening with, "Tell me how long is it boo (7 inches) Yup that will do". Pushing the envelope further comparable to Madonna's Erotica there's the sensual track titled, "Discipline" with raunchy S&M lyrics not quite the style to listen around those who get easily annoyed but rather a sort of guilty fantasy thought provoking track to perhaps be just a little bad --but not to take too serious.

This album is a step to a new venture where anything is possible, where the unexpected lures, and the expressions of love are explored in all sorts of ways through the planets, stars, and universe! Take the love journey and uncover the thoughts and emotions you never imagined!

*The Japanese Deluxe Edition will give you 2 extra tracks that will undue the 2 that are not perhaps top listeners choice. It has"Let Me Know", and "Feedback (Ralph Rosario Electroshok Radio)" + DVD viewable in the US.

Not Janet's best, but VERY Underrated - 3.5 Stars
Sound like a very good way to make a comeback? Not really. For Janet's tenth studio release, she dropped her main producers, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, started a short relationship with Island Records, and didn't write any of the songs. But, even though the songs sound very mainstream R&B, they are mainstream R&B at their finest. Indeed, many R&B acts that haven't achieved nearly as much success as Janet has could have done these songs. However, the songs would not have had the signature Jackson touch.

Does it really surprise us that they sound like what's on the radio now though? I mean, "All For You" was basically TRL bubblegum pop. But still the songs reigned superior to the likes of Britney Spears or Jessica Simpson. There is also the fact that at that time she still had her two main producers and actually wrote the songs. Anyway, if you despise popular music right now, I would think twice before getting Discipline. Most of the songs are produced by Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins (producer of "Say My Name" by Destiny's Child and "What About Us?" by Brandy, to name a few of his hits).

All of this being said, it is still better than her last project "20 Y. O. " in which she released to celebrate twenty years since her breakthrough record "Control," and possibly better than the one before that, "Damita Jo," which was a complete flop. Some of the Darkchild produced beats are pretty slick, including the irresistibly danceable "Rollercoaster" and the lead single "Feedback. " Other production highlights include the really cool Daft Punk sounding beat of "So Much Betta" and the mid tempo "Rock Wit U," both produced by then boyfriend Jermaine Dupri.

As for the ballads, they are all put together starting with track nine to track thirteen. They sound pretty descent separately, but when listening to them back to back it seems just redundant and to same-sounding, leaving you forgetting what they sound like completely. The interludes are an improvement from the last two albums, (let us NOT relive the nightmare that was "Country"), and most of them include a robot named Kyoko, who is also featured on "So Much Betta" and "Rock Wit U. "

Another thing that annoyed me was the photos. Janet Jackson is an attractive woman, which you could not tell at ALL from these pictures! The only picture from the Discipline sessions that I like was the "Feedback" single cover, which is NOT included in the booklet. I agree another reviewer who said she looks like a drag queen on the cover.

Overall, it's a very decent album, especially if you like her last few. Hopefully Janet will give us a TRUE comeback album as soon as possible. I think now more than ever her fans are ready for it.

GIVE IT THE CREDIT IT DESERVES!!!
O. The album is definitely not a true return to form for our pop princess, and will never be on the same level as her classics, but it's a MUCH better album than 20 Y. !!! Standout tracks include Curtains, 2Nite, Rock wit u, as well as Feedback which they still play @ the clubs (i. e. last week @ my B-day bash!!) Lol and dont 4get that she still beats all those wanna-bees out there like Ciara, Beyonce, Mariah and Britney. This album is also WAYYYYY better than Madonna's last album, Hard Candy! Trust me, I'm a big Madonna fan but most of that album was TERRIBLE. So b4 u judge MISS JACKSON, take a look @ the competition and give her the credit and RESPPECT she deserves! Thank u =}.

Discipline lives up to it's potential, but needs some tweaking
First, I must say that Public Relations did a horrible job promoting Discipline (not enough sales, an awesome tour that ended extremely early, very little airplay of music videos, and the list goes on. . ). In my opinion, Discipline is far better than the disappointing 20 Y. O. , but I have some major issues with Discipline: Janet did not write/co-produce any songs, Jermaine Dupri produced some of the tracks (though I was highly pleased with Rock With U), & Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis were missing from production! Other than that, I give Janet an A for effort! Here's the tracklist:
1. ID (interlude) - Janet speaking with a Japanese robot named Kyoko
2. Feedback - one of my favorite jams!! At first, I thought it was okay, but now I turn the volume up everytime I play it in my car. A nice hip-hop beat by Darkchild with Janet proclaiming "Strum me like a guitar/Blow out my amplifier!"
3. Luv - a fun, bouncy beat with a nice metaphor of falling in love! Another jam & a very catchy song!
4. Spinnin (interlude) - intro to Rollercoaster
5. Rollercoaster - one of the tracks that I skip. Definitely not iPod worthy due to the lack of melody!
6. Bathroom Break (interlude) - Janet and her friends talking in a bathroom at a club. Kinda pointless.
7. Rock With U - a nice club song (note: this is not the same version as MJ's Rock With You) with a techno feel to it. I was shocked at how it turned out because it was produced by Jermaine Dupri with the help of Ne-Yo!
8. 2nite - an okay song with some great latin breaks during the second verse and bridge!
9. Can't B Good - love this song. A great mid-tempo jam produced by Ne-Yo. Janet sings about falling in love, although she doesn't want to! If you listen closely, Janet sounds a little like Michael!
10. 4 Words (interlude) - love, fate, hope, destiny.
11. Never Letchu Go - I didn't really care for this song too much, but after I heard Janet perform it at the Rock Witchu Tour, I enjoyed it! The album version is okay, but definitely not better than the live version!
12. Truth or Dare (interlude) - self-explanatory! Pointless interlude!!
13. Greatest X - not iPod worthy! This song is definitely not for Janet (more for Chris Brown) as it is completely out of her element!
14. Good Morning Janet (interlude) - Janet talking with Kyoko
15. So Much Betta - a hot track which is definitely iPod worthy (although it's really short)! Produced by Jermaine Dupri (surprisingly), the song samples Daft Punk's Daftendirekt.
16. Play Selection (interlude) - an intro to The 1
17. The 1 - a horrendous song with Missy Elliot rapping. Once again, Janet is out of her element as this song does not suite her style.
18. What's Ur Name - an okay song, but extremely short produced by JD (no surprise because the song sounds like his work).
19. The Meaning (interlude) - Janet should've made a song out of this interlude! It's hot!!
20. Discipline - The sex song off the album. Janet proclaims that she needs discipline and that she's been "very bad!" A hot song although I am surprised that Janet did not write the lyrics!
21. Back (interlude)
22. Curtains - a nice way to close the album. Another sex song but with a hip-hop beat produced by Darkchild!
*Bonus Track for Japanese version/iTunes* 23. Let Me Know - A pretty catchy song which sounds completely like Andre 3000's Prototype (but with a faster beat).
Overall opinion: An okay album from Janet - definitely not her best! There are many elements missing (Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Janet's say in songs, etc), but a better album than 20 Y. O. If you are a die hard Janet fan, I say go ahead and purchase. If you're a beginning Janet fan, proceed with caution; I would not recommend this album for newbies. Design of a Decade: 1986-1996 is highly recommended for new Janet fans!

i started out listeninq to Desiqn of a Decade up until Discipline. Im only 16, but i've been listeninq 2 janet for a lonq time because of my mom. i beqqed my mom 2 buy Discipline because i loved all of the sinqles released (Feedback, Rock Wit U, & Luv. ) i love every sinqle sonq on this album and i think that she would have wanted us to listen to this album without referrinq to her past records. she wanted a fresh start and that's what she achieved with this masterpiece. i think this is an excellent dance record and i am forever a fan because of it. My favorite sonqs are Luv, Rock Wit U, Can't B Good, What's Ur Name, and Curtains. Althouqh the title track is a little too raunchy for my tastes i still found myself missinq it after takinq it off of my playlist. If your lookinq for a fresh, upbeat dance record 2 jam to i hiqhly recommend this. P. S. absolutely love the album's cover and pictures. she looks so different and beautiful and they fit the theme of the record.
