Mick Covers The Spectrum
But,despite their garagy rock n roll framework the Stones were so successful largely because they could take that style and blend everything from funk to folk into it. At first you might never think of a Rolling Stone as an all around musical player who can deal with many different styles. And that is exactly what Mick does on his third solo recording and the one many believe is his best. Now having experienced the very bloodless Primitive Cool personally I have to say that assessment might be very close to the truth. Mick is able to strut his stuff across "Wired All Night","Put Me In The Trash",the title song and "Mother Of A Man" which are all rocking tunes that would easily function on any Rolling Stone album in terms of quality alone. One of the standout qualities of this album is the heavy amount of funk and R&B here. It's what always made the very core of Mick's music in any context work and it's in full throttle here. "Use Me" is just about perfect for Mick;the arrangement and music is very close to Bill Withers' original but,at the same time Mick's vocals actually better the original because he turns Bill's moaning indifference into a growling, emotional tract. "Sweet Thing" finds Mick throwing down on a heavy funk original using his pimping, swaggering falsetto to the same great affect that he did thirteen years earlier on the title song of Emotional Rescue. On "Don't Tear Me Up" there's a chunky funk-blues backup that is more in Mick's comfort zone but is still strongly in the groove. Mick really has a way of allowing one to hear the funkiness in blues and vice versa and the idea that he's often able to cross any bridges between the two says a lot about how he handles his musical influences. The choice to cover James Brown's "Think",a somewhat neglected song in his vast catalog was deep-especially considering how the rollicking R&B flavor of James's original was in fact part of the musical tapestry from which the Stones started in the first place so,here we have Mick basically returning the favor:while James was still alive to be aware of it too. There are also two country songs on here in "Evening Gown" and "Hang Onto Me Tonight" which speak to a more rural expression of Mick's nature and he makes sure their both plenty bluesy to accomodate his style of course. "Angel In My Heart" is a well orchestrated ballad that works for Mick the way. . . say "Waiting For A Friend" does. The album ends with on a celtic pop note with "Handsome Molly". In any case Mick makes this album his and his no slave to any guests or to his production co-hort Rick Rubin. That,in addition to the strong overall material is one of the reasons why this album was such an artistic success.

TOTALLY LOVE IT!
Have had this CD for many years and have not grown tired. . . . lotsa rock and variation - I think Mick was still writing well at this time in his life and this gets a lot of car play time.

Best Thing He's Done In The Last Twenty Years
Then it all went down hill from there. The last really GREAT Stones album (Tattoo You) was put out the same year that the Camaro got square headlights. Nerdy Stones bloggers are not arguing about the merits of Dirty Work vs. Steel Wheels (quick - name the singles), and I'd guess no one in America is even playing Voodoo Lounge. But in the midst of all that stuff, Jagger's early 90's solo efforts produced a really great album, Wandering Spirit. Like all Stones music, there's no dated political message or humanitarian statement in here (e. g. , Honky Tonk Women, Brown Sugar, Tumbling Dice, etc. ). If there is a message at all, it is usually about, say, "relationships" (more e. g. , Star Star, Wild Horses, Some Girls, etc. ). Oh well. Most of the songs here fall into that vainglorious category, and so be it (but not really that naughty). Jagger provided the range of his talent, with cuts like "Sweet Thing" (falsetto in imitation of "Miss You"), a minstrel ballad "Angel In My Heart" (almost a copy of "Lady Jane"), and the rockers like "Wired All Night" and "Out of Focus. " "Hang On To Me Tonight" is performed about as well as anything I've heard him do. Buying a Jagger/Richards solo work is a little like settling for second best (ordering a Coke and getting a Sam's Choice), but this is really a tight record. Try it out for the price - at least it will reassure the last twenty years were not totally wasted.

I didn't care for this at all
This album is totally forgetable and a big disappointment. I much prefer Primitive Cool which has some really memorable tracks and She's the Boss second. .

Mick Jagger-Wandering Spirit
Produced by Rick Rubin if that rings a bell. This album gels, I mean man it rocks like Mick can. Mick is the entertainer of the universe, forget David Bowie and Sting. OK-Rod Stewart and Elton John give him a race for the watering hole! But now seriously isn't Mick like the one dude we all pretend to be in the shower? Hasn't he been there since the beginning of time and carried us all the way through practically everything--like love, marriage, family, divorce, death, wealth and poverty? Let's all give thanks for Mick and forget the Beatles(Paul McCartney)who jumped ship like decades ago. This is a great album by a great artist of all time anywhere handsdown. .
