Classic Funk from the King of Funk
his Production and arrangements along with his crafty metaphor songwriting and overall instrumentation was something else. Rick James was a Incredible Musical Genius. You and I, Mary Jane,Super Freak,Give it to me baby, cold blooded,17 are all stone cold top tier Jams that will make your head bop all over the place. his vocals were strong and soulful always. he had so many hooks, changes and overall horn parts that always made his music swing. Rick James had a Music Gumbo that included so many elements and yet he kept his own signature sound. Props always to the King of the Funk.
im rick james b*tch
all the songs are his big hits tho. this is the only cd ive got of rick james which is sad. first i heard of this guy was on the sample in redmans smoke buddah. i cant dis his music or this cd, but after downloading some other songs i can say that there are some songs missed out that should be here. to be honest i hate superfreak even tho musically its clever cos i just think of the awful mc hammer sadly. the rest of the joint is ill. R. I. P the legendary rick james. his music is funky and hip hop has taken a lot from this guy over the years so give props. he whipped charlie murphys ass.
peace.
Good, Not Great
Having said that, there is some good stuff on this CD, and it is cheap, making it a respectable value. This is one of a series of CDs from Motown that repackages earlier works from different artists in an attempt to maximize corporate revenue. Rick James is a talented musician, singer, and songwriter, so if you want an introduction to one of the kings of the bass line, this is a good place to start. It is not all inclusive, by any means, but does at least have the one thing every Rick James fan needs, namely "Super Freak", probably his ultimate recording.
This collection isn't great, but it is good. For an introduction to Rick James this works very well.
So what if it's not all-inclusive!!!
If ya like Rick James (and who doesn't), this set is a great appetizer, not too filling but satisfying to stimulate the funk palate for more.
