Bert at his BEST!
He influenced many a player in his time; most notably Jimmy Page of Led Zepplin fame. If you are not familiar with Bert's great acoustic guitar music, this collection is a wonderful place to start! This has several hard to find songs, demos, live performances and the like showcasing Bert in his prime.

The thing with Bert is you kind of have to get past his singing as it is pretty bad. . . It always has been bad but this collection seems to cover much of Bert's magic in playing and stays away from his lead vocals material. I won't kid you. Many a song features Bert's singing. You just have to get past it to really HEAR Bert's magic! Once you listen to his masterful acoustic guitar work, you begin to understand how a generation of Folk players were inspired by him. This collection is hard to find and may be limited if not OOP. Some of his best material is on this 2CD collection. Great spin!.

excellent two-disc review
The choice of material is excellent, though missing are a few of his best known pieces such as "I am Lonely" and "Jack Orion"; perhaps these were deliberately left out to make way for some infrequently heard B-sides of singles ("I Saw an Angel," "A Little Sweet Sunshine"). This two-CD collection concentrates on Bert's early period--that is, the music he recorded between 1965 and 1971 as a solo act, with John Renbourn, and as part of Pentangle. The balance of the material selected is good as well, with six or seven Pentangle works present, a couple of duets with John Renbourn, and the remaining thirty or so works a good sample of his best solo album work. At this price, moreover, the whole package is quite a bargain. This set represents good competition for the 1980 "Best of Bert Jansch" set (which covers the same period, but includes only material from his solo titles) and the recent 2-CD "Dazzling Stranger" collection, which attempts to survey his entire career (not entirely to its advantage, in my opinion).
