Not my favorite I had heard one of the tracks on a compilation but that seemed to be the best. This one was not my favorite. So I can not recommend this album.
Crystal clear synthesizer memories
The quality of the CD is top notch, and definitely holds up to the sound I remember from 1981 (I guess when you're talking about actual digital music, the whole "vinyl vs CD" is kind of a moot point. I had the 33rpm vinyl album of Magnetic Fields as soon as it came out, and played it often enough to wear out the grooves.
As far as the music itself is concerned: this may be the most accessible album Jarre has ever made (aside from Chronology). If you're starting a Jarre collection, start with this one, then ease into his more experimental work.
For what it's worth. . . recommended tags include "New age" - Jarre has never been "new age". Electronic, yes. Synthpop, yes. New age. . . no.
new old
Bought this album when it first came out in the seventies, liked it then, still like it now.
I liked it.
com incidentally, I've made it my goal to buy at least all of Jean Michel Jarre's most popular albums or, if possible, to hear samples and decide which ones I myself liked enough to want to own. Since hearing and later buying Oxygene and Equinoxe, from Amazon. Oxygene was excellent and Equinoxe continued that trend. Following Equinoxe, Jarre put out Les Chants Magnetiques Magnetic Fields in I believe 1981. Though it's very different from either of his two prior albums with some tracks having a much more mechanical sound to them as well as a much more rhythmic element than even Equinoxe, I find Magnetiques to be almost as good as the first two.
Oxygene began with a quiet, delicate track that sort of grew as it progressed. Equinoxe starts out triumphant, tones down for a bit in track 2 and then suddenly springs back to life with track 3. Magnetiques comes out with guns a-blazin', so to speak. Track 1, which has got to be at least fifteen minutes long, remains upbeat throughout until near the end it sort of tones down a bit and what sound like trains start to phase in. Track 2, as others have pointed out, does get bogged down by annoying handclapping sounds, but other than that it's a cool one. Track 3, like part 3 of Oxygene, is little more than a bridge between two and four. I like it, don't get me wrong, but it does still sound like something that might play in an elevator, perhaps while you were waiting for maintenance to get you unstuck from between two floors of the building. Track four is kinda cool, sounding to me like something that might serve well as the theme song to a TV show. Track five is, of course, that damn Rumba. I'm not sure what to think of it. I can't say I don't like it because that would be a lie. It's. . . interesting. Actually if you want my honest opinion it sounds rather like something that might fit in a Super Mario Brothers game.
All in all, I find Magnetiques to be as good as it's made out to be. I was able to borrow a copy from a friend to listen to and I plan on getting myself a copy just as soon as finances allow. So if you're new to Jarre, I'd definitely recommend this album over much of his newer material.
A classic
His later work never was better than his first 3 albums: Oxygene, Equinox and this one, Les Chantes Magnetiques. I you like Jarre, this is another classic. I gave 5 stars to all these 3 albums. .
