One of the rare instances in which more IS better
Adding a second CD and offering the full concert is VERY cool. "Deep Space Virgin Sky" has always been a treasured set among the Jeff-heads.

I'll be very honest with you up front: the draw for me is the five little words on the back of the CD: "Special appearance by Grace Slick. " Yes, she rode "Starship" (with Mickey Thomas) into the dirt. Yes, that's her singing on Starship's "We Built This City. "

But I've got to tell you. . . when she lets loose with "Probably keep us both aliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiive" ("Wooden Ships"), it's cold chills time and a reminder of why we loved her to begin with, why this band matters, and why EVERY 5-star review of this CD is spot-on accurate.

This might actually be the last "great" Starship CD. . . Paul, Marty, Grace, Jack. . . the full concert, excellent recording quality, 10 Airplane tracks, just a joy for anyone who followed the band in its prime.

My only complaint. . . not a surprise for anyone who's read my other reviews. . . is the absence of Jorma, but you can't have it all, I guess.

Highly recommended. .

This version only is the "Gold" standard. Enjoy!

Deeper Space/Extra Virgin Sky [LIVE] Anytime a release can satisfy the old and please the new it has to possess unique attributes. As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various music supplies and recordings from the 60's and 70's. The May 2002 intensified version of "Deep Space/Virgin Sky" is necessary for the Airplane and or Jefferson Starship collector.

From the Airplane camp four members of the band are on stage Marty, Jack, Paul, and Grace makes a cameo! In typical fashion she tells a story prior to "Lawman" that shows she hasn't mellowed with age. Ten tracks are from Jefferson Airplane records through the break-up of 1972. "The Other Side Of This Life (Wrongly called on the CD "Another Side Of This Life") is stretched to eleven minutes. Marty Balin's tribute to Papa John Creach titled "Papa John" is full of sincerity. I know that first hand from the interview I had with Marty for the Jefferson Airplane book.

For the Jefferson Starship fan, they can experience the fabulous and powerful voice of Darby Gould. The predecessor to the brilliant and superlative Diana Mangano, Darby could belt out Deep Purple or Jefferson Airplane with the same intensity and conviction. One of Paul Kantner's most underrated tunes (Especially by Paul) "I'm On Fire" packs a powerful punch. Marty does a stellar vocal on his friend Jesse Barish's tune "Count On Me. " The version of "Gold" will have the walls shake.

The fidelity of the newer version gives you a first class seat. This isn't a dinosaur band going through the motions. To this day, (Summer 2007) Paul and the Jefferson Starship are out on the road making it cool to be old.

Get a ticket, relax, and engulf yourself in some of the best rock tunes ever penned.

Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

Deeper Space/Extra Virgin Sky-Jefferson Starship
This album(CD) is a must have masterpiece by
one of the best rock groups there is. All i can say is wow. These guys are professionals
on top of the game. This is perfect for that all night party were you
just want to rock out and get loose. I have had the CD for about
five years and still play it alot. Way to go ,excellent!!.

Have You Seen the Saucers?
Although the band has only two of its original members (Paul Kantner and Marty Balin) they are still very much with us and on the road. Most music fans know that the Jefferson Airplane reassembled under the leadership of Paul Kantner to become the Jefferson Starship but their are some who ask "whatever happened to the Jefferson Starship?" the answer is simple silly white rabbit - they never left. And what do they sound like now? Gather around my children and I will tell you. If you don't see them the next time they play at a venue near you (and they really do get around) they sound very much like what you will hear on this CD. After having more lives than a cat the Jefferson Starship is still here and vital.
Buy this CD and see their next show.

A great concert, now COMPLETE!
Now, it's TWO discs. This is a "fleshed out" version of the 1995 release DEEP SPACE, VIRGIN SKY. "And," you ask, "what's the point? Why reissue -- even in an extended version -- live music that's now 9 years old?"

Here's why: The sound is better. MUCH better. The concert now sounds complete, and the song sequence MAKES SENSE. And best of all, it was a damn good concert! Finally, we have a Jefferson Starship CD featuring DARBY GOULD's wonderful, powerful vocals. Diana Mangano is terrific, but it's nice that we now have a FULL live CD featuring Darby, who was integral in the JS relaunch 10 years back. PLUS. . . Grace Slick's here! A monumental concert at the House of Blues now fully available on CD. Even if you have the first version, buy this one. You'll never go back!.
