one of the best...

oh, sure there are plenty of songs out there that are better than any one song on this album, but as a whole, nothing compares. if not the best album in the history (past , present, or future) of music.
just buy it, & be happy (or sad).

stranded on a deserted island & only have have one album to pick to have with you? this is it.

1,000,000 stars out of 5.

but after thinking about it a bit, some of their other albums are even better.

I Hate Rock and Roll
I have to agree that "I Hate Rock and Roll" is one of thee best rockers. It only gets 4 stars from me because I'm weighing it against previous JMC works. . . fantastic! A great, overlooked album. It is a grown up album, scarred by the heartbreaks after all the sex in the previous albums, and it's a great paean to both the spirit of rock and roll and to the JMC--somehow affirming that one cries into one's beer at night but comes out swinging hard the very next day.

JMC's last hurrah is a mixed bag
After only six studio albums (I'm not counting "B-Sides"), William and Jim Reid came to the conclusion that they couldn't stand being in the same room (or on the same stage) together. Yet another instance where Rock and Roll brothers just can't stay together. What a shame.

What's so interesting about "Munki" concerns the authorship of the songs. No longer could I be confident in identifying a song as Jim's or William's. William especially, can apparently write in his brother's style. For instance, my favorite song on the album, "Degenerate" sounds like Jim at his grungy best, but no! It's brother William's composition.

In my opinion, "Munki" is somewhat of a mess. By far, JMC's most adventurous and experimental album, the whole thing seems to heavily depend upon the three songs in the center of the album, namely "Virtually Unreal," the aforementioned "Degenerate," and "Cracking Up. " Honestly, I could skip the others, a few of which are laced with pointless obscenities, almost as if the Reids wanted that parental advisory sticker.

Anyway, I still thoroughly enjoy listening to The Jesus and Mary Chain. After "Stoned and Dethroned," I saw them in concert at a small NYC venue, which was great (although my date didn't quite get it and wanted to leave after "Reverence" -- the one that starts off with "I want to die just like Jesus Christ"). Mazzy Star opened, and, you guessed it, the adorable Hope Sandoval came out to duet with Jim on "Sometimes Always. "

Hey, if the original members of "Cream" can reunite, there must be hope for the Reid brothers too!.

This Is Amazing!
o. Whenever I feel really p. 'ed this is a great album to listen to. It blows away the crap that people call "indie" these days. Like that jerk off cash cow Conor Oberst. I Hate Rock N' Roll is IMHO one of the best songs ever written. This is one of the JAMC's best albums. Only a couple of their albums can rival this one. An amazing finale for this band. It's like one of their concerts; leaves you with a thirst for more, and the sensation of ringing feedback damaging your ears forever. Incredible!.

Another CLASSIC JAMC album!!!
In fact, I rank it FOURTH, after PSYCHOCANDY, DARKLANDS & BARBED WIRE KISSES. MUNKI is one of the BEST JAMC albums. Really, it's THAT CLASSIC JAMC!!! It's pure pleasure to listen to, is consistenly great, and is VERY LOUD!!! I've been thoroughly enjoying it since it came out in 1998!! I still listen to it monthly!! You've GOTTA at least check it out for yourself - if you like THE CHAIN, you will certainly ENJOY this CD!!!.
