Not Much Of A Turn On
This album has little in common with the surf tunes and buzzsaw distortion of their acclaimed debut PSYCHOCANDY. This music isn't very exciting and it's not nearly as dark as some would have you believe or what the title implies. The song "Darklands" sounds too much like Bowie's "Heroes" (if you know what I mean - the melody is a little too similar) and I get the feeling that's not the only thing ripped-off on this album. Not that it really matters much anyway because there's plenty of songs I do like that rips off other peoples' music.

I'm sure many would slag my opinion, but it just comes down to a question of taste - and this album tastes pretty bland to me. However, it's certainly NOT true that all of J&MC's albums sound the same and there's 2 very different sounding ones that I would recommend far more than DARKLANDS: the dancable shredfest HONEY'S DEAD and the laid-back, supercool and mostly acoustic STONED AND DETHRONED.

Fine effort
Jesus and Mary Chain are cult heroes for several reasons, and Darklands is one of them. A lot lighter than Psychocandy, this second album was a great change of pace.

One of the best albums ever !
This is one of the albums I could not live without. Darklands is pure genious - from the first note of the opening track to the very last sound of 'About You'. While 'Psycho Candy' was a fantastic debut, 'Darklands' just blew me away. 'April Skies' and 'Happy when it rains' were two grandiose singles, released prior to 'Darklands', and there is not a bad song on this entire album. The first time I put this LP on my turntable was back in 1987 and I have listened to it at least once a month every year since then. Your CD collection will not be complete without this album !.

No More Hissssssssssssssssssss....
The brothers Reid, accompanied only by a drum machine and their guitars, played a half hour of what sounded like feedback amplified through a fast food restaurant's drive-through speaker system in a wind tunnel, with an occasional hook or melody coming through the din, never turning to face the audience once. Back when The Jesus & Mary Chain released their debut album "Psychocandy," curiosity got the better of me and I went to check out the band when they played a gig at a [club], located in one of Detroit's worst neighborhoods. So imagine my surprise, and delight, when, a few years later, I bought "Darklands," slapped it on my turntable and heard some of the darkest, melodic, most beautiful noise ever committed to vinyl. Songs like "Happy When It Rains" and "April Skies," in a perfect world, would have been huge radio hits. The album that showed the world what is at the core of the J&MC's music when stripped of all the feedback, distortion, and white noise. Simply stunning.

One Of The Best Pop Records of the 80's!
Expectations we're likely pretty high for Jesus and Mary Chain's sophmore album. After releasing the astonishing debut Psychocandy in 1985. What they delivered hardly disapointed though, for Darklands turned out to be an incredible indie-rock record on it's own right. The Reid brothers simply erased the squealing layers of feedback, distortion and noise which they beautifully showcased on they're first album and uncovered what had always layed just beneath them; pop songs! Though the lyrics reflect thoughts of angst, despair, love-lorn and lost, depression and suicide, the music is filled with much joy and hope.

Psychocandy is still my favorite Mary Chain record, but Darklands will hold a high place in my collection for it's sheer audicity to play down the noise and bring on the pop.
