Great Listening Jethro Tull
All great songs. Having been a long time fan going on 40 years, this CD was a special treat. Anderson's Celtic theme is obvious. Haunting music, deep and complex lyrics but in a "soft and low" style. The guitar playing is one-of-a-kind. Quality written. For those who love Zappa, you now have your A(nderson) to Z. All the rest in the middle, just isn't the same. .

Excellent CD! You just can't go wrong with Jethro Tull and the accoustic compilation is a great concept.

+ 1/2 stars...Hits Most of the Highlights

There are the usual suspects, such as "Fat Man," "Life Is a Long Song," "Mother Goose"--heck, just about everything here from the Seventies (tracks 1-13) is required listening. This 24-track collection hits most of the acoustic highlights in Jethro Tull's forty-year history from 1969's STAND UP through their most recent studio album, 2003's seasonal album THE JETHRO TULL CHRISTMAS ALBUM. But this collection also covers such latter-Tull chestnuts as "Under Wraps 2" (from 1984's UNDER WRAPS), as well as a pair of gems from Ian Anderson's recent solo albums--"The Water Carrier" (from 2000's THE SECRET LANGUAGE OF BIRDS) and "Rupi's Dance" (from 2003's RUPI'S DANCE). There are also two tracks that first appeared on earlier albums (LIVING IN THE PAST and HEAVY HORSES respectively) that were reworked for their Christmas album--"A Christmas Song" and "Weathercock. " The last two tracks appear in a previously unreleased form--"One Brown Mouse" and "Pastime with Good Company. "

For fans that have long waited for a collection of the best of the acoustic side of Jethro Tull, this is a real treat. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED [Running Time - 77:56].

The Best of Acoustic Jethro Tull
In the galaxy of Tull brilliance a large measure of the band's unique qualities is derived from Ian Anderson's acoustic folk and folk/rock elements and this collection is an excellent representation of those sounds.

Fair enough.
While it's hard to disagree with many of the song selections, the *versions* of the songs selected are much more easy to gripe about. Jethro Tull has released yet another compilation album, but this one is a little different that the mass of best-of's previously churned out by Ian Anderson and Co. Why include inferior re-workings of Weathercock, A Christmas Song and Jack-A-Lynn? I mean, these aren't bad versions at all; just not as good as the originals. Actually, the re-do that I was worried about most (One Brown Mouse) is actually very well done.

I would say that combining this set with the other recently released Best-Of would be a fair enough invitation into Tull's fascinating universe. Jethro Tull's acoustic music is a well-kept secret, and for those not in the know, these songs have a haunting timelessness that will hook you. I've always maintained that Anderson is one of very few geniuses in rock music, and this disc makes that case nicely.

Still, some definitely missed opportunities from Mr. Anderson. Ian, why didn't you include the fine acoustic demo of Jack-A-Lynn that was made in the early Eighties? This is one of the greatest recordings that I've ever heard. Why not include any of the wonderful original Heavy Horses tunes, instead of remakes of those songs? Why are the Benefit and A Passion Play albums always neglected when these compilations come out? Why on earth wasn't the awesome A Little Light Music version of Bouree included on this set? Naturally, these are questions that rabid Tull fans like myself will ask. For the casual fan, though, this set will work just fine.
