There hasn't been a review for this album in 7 years, SO... Not as "perfect" as Clarity, but that's one of its most attractive qualities. This is my favorite Jimmy Eat World album. The vocals are harsher (and shared with Tom, who is a great singer), the songs less perfectly structured. But there is something about a band's first recordings, when the only thing fueling the music was passion.
Static Prevails rocks hard when it rocks, but at at the same time manages to put you in a dreamlike stupor. That is one of the best things about Jimmy Eat World. No matter how aggressive the song, they always have a warm quality. Listening to this band is like being wrapped in a big musical blanket.
Highlights of this album are Episode IV, World Is Static, Robot Factory, and the closer Anderson Mesa. This is probably my favorite album closer of all time, and is a song I could listen to on repeat for hours- subtle at the start and it builds up to an extremely powerful end. .
I give it 4 and a half, but we'll round up...
I love this album, but it is not the writing masterpiece that clarity is. Now, this is not Clarity, so if you're looking for just straight melody all the way through, this is not the album for you. This is far less emo, way more balls to the wall, even though it's got the melody in it. It definetly has traces of the melody, but it's not nearly as prevelant as it is in the newer material. This is definetly still one of my favorites, and a great major label debut for Jimmy Eat World. Go ahead and check this one out if you want to rock. That's all.
An emo treasure
" This is undoubtably my favorite emo release. Slow high end riffs mixed with some punk and very heartfelt(though sometimes melodramatic) lyrics define "Static Prevails. Claire, Digits, and Anderson Mesa are some of the most impressive tracks, but this album is outstanding from beginning to end. There is never a disappointing moment. If you are a fan of The Get Up Kids, Saves The Day, or Texas Is The Reason, then this is undoubtably a must have. Pick up this one, pick up all of their discs, Jimmy Eat World is an absolutely amazing band.
amazing
harder than clarity(the most perfect album ever made) and truly cool. this cd is simply amazing. it is a must.
LISTEN AFTER CLARITY
I was in awe of "Clarity" and wanted to know more about JEW. From beginning to finish, this album is an emotional rollercoaster, to coin a cliche, and you can't do anything but pay attention. Static Prevails explains everything. THe emotion, the thrashing guitars, the pounding beats. This album even has dynamics down, with some songs going from loud to soft at perfect times. Great stuff.
