Futures, Jimmy Eat Worlds Best Album Some bands can do this earlier (Hidden In Plain View, Senses Fail, Armor For Sleep) but I find in admirable that JEW did not strike gold right away. Futures is definetly the best Jimmy Eat World CD yet, there were standout tracks on all their other CDs but this is their first cd that shows they can prove greatness with every song. Let me clarify, I love Clarity, its a great CD, but there about 3-5 songs that just dont really get me. On Bleed American there were about 2-3, but I love that CD also. However every song on this CD is amazing to me. This is a great CD for anyone who likes Jimmy Eat World at all, or similar artists like Armor For Sleep, Dashboard Confessional, Taking Back Sunday etc.
Outstanding Album
Isn't that what all great albums should be?
The entire CD is on point, and the bonus disc is pretty cool. Futures is an excellent album and a great choice to purchase. Some demos showed that the songs had to be refined and polished, others were virtually complete and the band had them down pat.
But what's most important is the main disc, and it's stellar. It has realistic and inspiring lyrics, great song sequencing, and a great mix of slower and faster songs. The band can play resonant opuses, but they can also turn their guitars way down and thrash.
Every song is done well, and most are a breath of exhiliration. Try waking up to the title track, it's great! 5/5, one of the upper-tier albums of the 2000s.
Beautiful!
Futures is a brilliant album, with a lot of really catchy songs. OK, I've never heard any of Jimmy Eat World's older stuff, but I'm seriously tempted to buy one of their older CDs.
Now for a song-by-song breakdown.
Futures--Eh, a bit disappointing. 3/5
Just Tonight--Worst song on the album! I really don't like this one. 1/5
Work--YES! This is where the CD really picks up. It's a very catchy tune, a radio-friendly love song. It also has a twinge of sadness. This is my favorite song on the album. 6/5
Kill--Another really good song. I like how the choruses are all different. 5/5
The World You Love--A rather catchy, happy-sounding song. 5/5
Pain--The most rockin' song on the album. . . it's really a song you can bang your head to. 5/5
Drugs Or Me--Very slow, quiet song. Not the best song on the album, but not bad. 4/5
Polaris--Really good. It's kind of sandwiched in between a catchy pop song and a more melancholy sound. 5/5
Nothingwrong--Another more rockish song, but not as good as Pain. 4/5
Night Drive--Some sort of love song. Pretty good. 5/5
23--Another slow song, and a very good one. 5/5
Overall, this is a really good album with a variety of sounds.
One of the best of 2004
I have Bleed American and I listened to it faithfully. I wasn't a really big fan of Jimmy Eat World. But I've found that "Futures" was definitely a fresh taste after some of the same old garbage from 2004 (one of the worst years for music).
So here are the top songs in my opinion.
"Futures" - hard hitting and great. Its just a good example of why Jimmy Eat World are unique. Plus a tip of the hat towards Election Day last November.
"Work" - Best song on the CD. I know its a total pop hit, but its ridiculously catchy and just a fun song to hear. Goes right up there with "sweetness" and "Lucky Denver Mint" as being one of the most catchy songs they've done.
"Kill" Another catchy song that sticks out in my head. One of their more experimental too, because it doesn't sound like any of their other material (as far as lyrics go).
"Pain" - the first single, definitely a rougher song then others, but its great. They needed a single like this to just slam us back into the Jimmy Eat World state of mind.
"Nothingwrong" - another great song. Very hard, very driven. Lyrics are simple, but that's fine by me. Its still great to listen to.
"23" Great closer. Couldn't think of a better way to do it.
Overall I give this a 5/5 because I think its quite possibly the best CD I bought in 2004. I found this to be more refreshing then anything else I bought last year. Props to J. E. W. and their upcoming tour with Taking Back Sunday, another fabulous band.
peace.
Nothingwrong
That's not to say there aren't any quiet songs, there are. Jimmy eat world returns with the rock you'd all expect to hear. It's a very balanced album, I'd say half are loud and half are quiet.
The topics range from lost love, longing and drugs to selling out with many stops along the way.
Jimmy Eat World are not just "one trick ponies" either. There's the standard J. E. W. sound throughout but they're trying new things. The guitar riff in "Nothing Wrong" could easily be mistaken for Soundgarden. "23" could fool you into thinking you're listening to the Cure (until the singing starts). And I'm touched by the tip of the hat to Heatmiser in "Kill".
This is a very solid album and I've been listening to it for months now. It's still not getting old.
The bonus disc of demos is cool but not totally necessary. If you're a die hard fan or just interested in what songs sound like before they're recorded in a big studio, it's worth the extra few bucks. If you just want to get the meat and potatoes, go for the regular version.
