Another Great Release from JEW The sound is very similar to the regret and dark isolation that Futures described, except for "Closer" which describes someone trying to be better for the one they love. Stay on My Side Tonight is the EP for JEW's 2004 release, Futures, and like Futures, SoMST doesn't disappoint. Every song (except arguably the "Drugs or Me" remix) is a gem. "Over" sounds unoriginal at first listen, but it grows on you slowly. "Disintegration" is just epic, and "Half Right" a cover of the Heatmeiser song referenced in "Kill" from Futures, is very well done and certainly a fitting cover for JEW. Highly recommend this to anyone who loved Futures. .
Great EP, good price
This is basically a small compilation of very well polished B-sides. Big fan of Jimmy Eat World. Awesome CD for any Jimmy Eat World fan.
Stunning.
Disintegration (12/10) - the gem of this ep. Simply put, an amazing EP to go along with Futures. An epic 7 minute song, and as a reviewer put it earlier, listen to it with the bass up to get the full effect of the song. This alone is worth the entire purchase.
Over (10/10) - a great JEW song. A simple melody with some well-written lyrics.
Closer (9. 5/10) - I enjoy this song, not as effective to me as the first two, but still a good one.
Half-Right (9/10) - I'm not sure why I don't listen to this one as much, probably because it just doesn't hook me in like the first two, but it's definitely a song that harkens back to the earlier days of JEW.
Drugs or Me (5/10) - A filler remix. Could've been an awesome EP without this song.
Overall, it's a worthwhile ep, and for those that have yet to get into this band, this would be an amazing introduction.
Interesting...
However, as some mentioned, it is definitely an extension of the darker themes and more complex melodies from their "Futures" album. This is an excellent EP. The songwriting here is a step past "Bleed American," and there are no cheery pop anthems, just a few complex rock ballads ("rock ballads" sounds lame, but there's no better way to describe it).
If nothing else, download the track, "Disintegration. " It is absolutely gorgeous. One reviewer described it as "lush" and "epic," and I absolutely agree. It starts slow, and builds to an amazing crescendoed chorus near the halfway point. It's like something off "Clarity," but "grown-up. " "Disintegration" was enough for me to justify owning the album, although the other songs are also great (except for the somewhat overmixed "Drugs or Me").
I was lucky enough to see their "anti-stadium," (e. g. , ballads) tour in 2007, and "Disintegration" was just as stunning and intense then as it was on the album, and I learned that if I was ever going to listen to this song, to do it with the bass up, so that Zach's drumming makes an impact. Try it out, it's well worth the $0. 99. . . because the Amazon "sample" doesn't do this song justice. And then make sure that you persevere until the end.
I liked "Drugs or Me"
" While the original "Drugs or Me" was slow, ponderous, and boring, the remix is sprightly, sprawling, and a pure delight to listen too. While I agree with most of the other reviews I think several people severely misjudged the closing track "Drugs or Me. This song, along with "Disintegration", is easily one of the best on the EP. Guess it just comes down to personal taste. .
