Loved it then, love it now I loved it so much. I remember "discovering" this in my parents' record collection in 1967 when I was 9. . . I knew every word because I listened over and over on their stereo system that filled the house. The first time you hear "Quiet Nights" and "Once, I Loved". . . it's so soulful and peaceful, and sad. And there is not another recording of "Ipanema" that comes close to this one. I've never heard anything else of Antonio Carlos Jobim but this, and it's enough for a lifetime. I also read every word of the jacket. I remember one line in particular, they used to tell stories on the backs of the record albums, and whomever was doing the review told how Sinatra said if he sang any softer on this album, he'd be laying on the piano. It was like nothing I'd ever heard, and at that time I was into the Beatles, Jackson 5, Donovan, Mama's & Papa's, Louis Armstrong, Della Reese, Ray Charles, Peggy Lee. . . anything my mom & dad put on at parties, I knew instantly and forever. I think I just loved music where you could understand the words and feel the song. I have always had a copy of this "album" and now on CD, and when it gets worn I buy a new one. It surprised me the other day when I was listening to NPR and they had a little review, someone talking about it, and it made me remember that I don't know where my latest copy is. So here I go again, ready to purchase a new one on Amazon. It just doesn't get any better than this.
Sinatra never better
I have been a Sinatra fan forever and thought he was done mastering new challenges . . until this. There isn't one song on this album that he hasn't treated with more meaning and feeling than any other artist I've heard. The champion of timing showed himself to be the master of subtle nuances in every piece. The surprise? Never imagined the up-tune Baubles, Bangles and Beads could be turned into an extraordinarily tender love song. .
Not their best work
I am literally shocked at the response that people are giving this. I have to tell you, I love Sinatra, I love Jobim, I love Bossa Nova, this album is horrible. This product was produced at a time when Bossa was the rage, and every crooner and jazz musician was making Bossa albums. This album introduces nothing new, and the vocals and arrangements are mediocre at best. Really, do not get this album, it is awful.
A Sinatra Lover's Must
I purchased this album when it first came out years ago. Excellent album. When I saw it available in CD format I had to buy it. I'm not sorry. Soft, relaxing music that soothes the soul. .
Languid, rich, enchanting
This is not the swing and brass of his work with Billy May or Nelson Riddle. Sinatra recorded this most intimate of albums in middle age and at the height of his powers. Sinatra's dreamy, languorous, slightly haunted baritone is perfectly matched to Jobim's gentle bossa nova melodies and exquisitely complemented by Claus Ogerman's orchestra. Listen to the muted, melancholic anguish in his voice on "Insensatez," and the gentle, deeply expressive quality (without ever veering into schmaltz) of his phrasing on "If You Never Come to Me. "
There's nostalgia here: this music reminds me of listening to a '70s FM radio beautiful-music station on a warm summer night lit by strings of colored patio lights. But this is serious music, as demonstrated by the fact that this album continues to be treasured as a favorite among serious Sinatra devotees.
