The Robert Johnson CD you need
But, as other reviewers have noted, the sequencing of release takes and alternates is disconcerting. Of course, the "Complete" 2-CD set is the one most people buy. This budget CD has the best version of each of Robert Johnson's 29 songs. Songs are grouped by session but within each session are arranged for the best listening experience. And the sound is, considering the age of the recordings, as good as one could hope to expect--which is very good indeed. Usually not available directly from Amazon but can be quickly obtained from the listed sellers. I bought mine from CD Zone (UK) and it arrived within 10 days.

If you want to have something to sit on your shelf as an indicator of your good taste, get the box set. But if you want to really get into the music of Robert Johnson and understand his legacy, buy this CD.

A concise presentation
The columbia product features all of the initial recordings and some outtakes - right next to each other in the order on the CDs. I chose this CD because it covers at least 1 version of Robert Johnson's recorded songs. I would think that to a performer or collector or enthusiast that the extra tracks might be valuable, however I am none of the above, just an individual appreciative of acoustic blues - regardless of whether it is in Piedmont or Delta style. These 29 are enough. . . long overdue in my opinion. The liner notes are concise and brief. With the net at our fingertips, much information about Robert Johnson can easily be found. This is the historic records without the fluff. Highly recommended.

perfect
" I don't need two takes of the same song. This collection is much better than "The Complete Recordings. This CD includes only the best version of each song, and I agree with their selections.
