Got this for free, but would pay $100 for it.I had all the 12" singles, including pic discs and Japan mini-albums. In the 80's,I loved HoJO. But after 89, I never bought any of his new stuff. I was into Hothouse Flowers,Del Amitri, etc. In 1999, I received a promo of the People CD by Howard. I was expecting it to be like all the other new albums by groups of the past, boring and drawn-out. I scanned it before playing it in its entirety, I was immediately surprised how good it was. I would play Let The People Have Their Say over & over. Then I would start a love with Let Me Be The First. I was unusually drawn to it, I would keep putting this cd in, something about it makes me feel good. It is a huge shame that it never got played on the radio. Several tracks could have been top 10. The DJ:s are thinking of him, the way I was before I heard this album. I feel bad for having even thought that way. Dream Into Action was my favorite, but this outdoes it in a million ways. Stations that play 80's music should give the old group's new work half a chance, or miss out on stuff like this.
YAWN
I agree with the previous reviewer that this is elevator music, for the most part. In a word, YAWN. This is definitely my least favorite HoJo cd. The Japanese precursor "Angels and Lovers", which contains many of the same tracks, is a tad better (but not much).
AWESOME!! And he's a fellow SGI member!!
These songs include YOU'RE THE BUDDHA, TOMMORROW IS NOW, WE MAKE THE WEATHER, IF YOU LOVE and NOTHING TO FEAR. PEOPLE is Howard's BEST CD to date!! The songs that move me the most are those inspired by Howard's practice of the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin. All concepts we believe in as Nichiren Buddhists! I, too, am a member of the same Nichiren Buddhist organization, the SOKA GAKKAI INTERNATIONAL (SGI. ) You are AWESOME Howard!! Nam myoho renge kyo.
Wes.
if you were a dance/pop fan in the 80's, don't even bother
The same can be said of his previous album, In The Running. While Howard Jones is obviously a very talented and lyrically gifted musician, for those of us who were partial to the synth-pop sounds of the 80's, which some would argue progressed into the 90's euro/dance/pop sound, this is not an album worth listening to. While some of us may have "matured" and now prefer "elevator music", or adult contemporary styles, this does not describe the vast majority of Howard's fans from the 80's. The number of people who turn out for his concerts tells the story (i. e. less than 100 in Toronto, Canada - almost embarassing really). Remixed versions of Angels & Lovers and Let The People Have Their Say were a good college try.
HoJo steps up another level!
I thought it impossible to out do that album. When "Live Acoutsic America" was released, I was amazed that this viable artist I had heard growing up was so talented that he had taken the energy from the keyboard and put it to piano. Now, with "People", we get a fresh, new sound and we are taken on yet another ride into HoJo's better place. . with a rich, full sound of a band. I attended his concert and was thoroughly impressed, not just with the new material, but that he had transformed his previous hits into new versions, all of which were incredible. I give 5 Stars for taking a wonderful chance at a different sound, and for sticking with an overall positive and complete, balanced sound and image that one could only expect from Howard Jones.
