Tom Jones Gold--it's about the essentials Tom never lets us down; he can sing with the best of them. Tom Jones Gold is a two CD set that is a wonderful collection of Tom Jones hits. Indeed, when you hear him sing you listen and you listen closely--his performances are always THAT good. The quality of the sound on this two CD set is excellent and the artwork is very good although it is somewhat standard for this CD series.
The first CD starts with one of Tom's biggest hits ever, "It's Not Unusual. " "It's Not Unusual" is a dynamic number with lots of power; Tom never falters and that horn solo is terrific. "With These Hands" charms me with its beauty; Tom sings this perfectly and that arrangement for the piano shines brightly. "With These Hands" is one of the most beautiful love songs I've ever heard and Tom really enhances it all the more with his excellent diction. "What's New Pussycat?" was another huge hit for Tom; and many people still enjoy hearing Tom sing this tune. "To Make A Big Man Cry" is a poignant song and Tom delivers this with all the grace and style of a champ!
"Green Green Grass Of Home" has just a touch of country to it that embellishes this ballad; Tom's ability to deliver with all his heart and soul makes "Green Green Grass Of Home" a major highlight of this two CD set. "Sixteen Tons" is a great one with some awesome percussion that Tom aces effortlessly; and listen for "I'm Coming Home. " "I'm Coming Home" gets a very sensitive treatment from Tom and the backup chorus makes it very pretty. "Delilah" is easily one of my very favorite Tom Jones tunes; I love to hear "Delilah" when Tom sings it--it's so emotional I could never forget the pain of which Tom sings. "Looking Out My Window" closes the first CD with a `60s style arrangement and Tom does this with panache.
The second CD starts with an awesome number, "Love Me Tonight. " Tom makes this take off like a jet! "Without Love" is quite sensitive; and I always like it when Tom Jones sings "I (Who Have Nothing). " "I (Who Have Nothing)" has a very lush arrangement but they never drown out Tom--excellent! Of course, Tom made good yet again with his hit entitled "She's A Lady;" this ballad never sounded so good as when Tom Jones sung it. "Till" is a most romantic number. The backup chorus works very well--not that Tom needed it; but they sound pretty god anyway. "The Witch Queen of New Orleans" has a jazz/rock flavor to it that I like a lot; and Tom does this one up right!
"Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone" gets a fine treatment from Tom Jones and the music fits in perfectly with his vocals. "Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone" is easily a major highlight of the second CD. There's also the very moving "(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want To Be Right;" Tom delivers this with all the style of a legendary pro and that would definitely be a good description for Tom! "I Got Your Number" is another pretty wonderful tune that has a rock flavor to make it great; and the second CD ends strong with Tom Jones performing "Memories Don't Leave Like People Do. " "Memories Don't Leave Like People Do" is extremely well done and I think you'll like it very much.
Tom Jones remains a legendary entertainer; if you have any doubts about it just get this two CD set and listen! This will be more than enough to lay your concerns to rest. Naturally, this is a "must-have" for Tom's fans.
Great job, Tom! Thank you!
