Janis at the height of her career She had left Big Brother and the Holding Company and was trying to break into a more mainstream style of blues. I think this album captures Janis at the height of her much-too-short career. Sure, the horn section is a bit much at times, but Janis has that high-energy delivery going dead on. Sort of a Tina Turner way before her time. If you like Janis, you should own this album.
The Best!!
Every song is great. I feel this was one of Janis Joplins best recordings. .
THE EMERGING PERSONA OF PEARL
SHE NO LONGER WANTED TO BE JUST ANOTHER MEMBER OF A BAND, AND WAS STARTING TO MORPH INTO HER "PEARL" PERSONA AT THIS POINT (NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH "SASHA FIERCE"). THIS IS THE FIRST SOLO ALBUM FROM JANIS JOPLIN AFTER SHE LEFT BIG BROTHER AND THE HOLDING COMPANY. FANS OF JANIS JOPLIN WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED WITH THIS ALBUM, HER VOICE IS IN GOOD FORM, AND THIS CD INCLUDES TWO LIVE TRACKS THAT WERE NOT INCLUDED ON THE ORIGINAL ALBUM.
excellent
awesome cd,the highlight for me is "one good man" with fantastic guitar work from MICHAEL BLOOMFIELD.
SHE MADE EACH SONG HER OWN!!!!!!
SHE MADE EACH SONG HER OWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Myra Friedman (Janis' first biographer) writes that at the time of JJ death she had od'ed 8x? and that as of recording this record she didn't have the maturity to lead a band, her first band being one where she was a member not a leader AND that at this time in her life she was so addicted she `could have been a junkie nodding in a doorway!!!!!!'
All that being said this makes this album even more amazing!
What writer Bob Christgau said is `JJ made a song her own merely by breathing on it, she didn't interpret the material!!'
