The wild child
Perry's vocals, though few, are absolutely magnificent. This is a showcase of the exceptionally talented. The more complex and sophisticated instrumentals found here are very impressive. Dream After Dream was not intended as an album. It is a soundtrack of music scored for a Japanese film and is about 35 minutes long. It is neither pop radio, nor pre-Perry fusion. It is more progressive and symphonic with influences of several genres including blues, classical, and jazz . . . and it is really, really great. I think people who appreciate various musical genres, sheer talent, or the musicianship of the individual artists will enjoy it. Those wanting more pop radio won't find any. This unique 1980 release is the least known and most overlooked. I mistakenly passed on it a few times due to inaccurate descriptions from salesclerks and lousy music samplers. I'd rebuy it in a heartbeat. . . and have.

The artists assembled here are among the best in the business, and they do not disappoint. Like the classic albums from this era, the work is outstanding, and some may appeal more to your particular musical taste than others. I like them all for very different reasons. I wouldn't forego buying several of the classic albums and/or solo albums for it; it's not deemed essential. If you have those, I'd definately buy it. It is not one to overlook -- and the show is worth the admission fee.

This is the greatest Journey album ever
Unlike their mass-produced offerings, which are still quite excellent, this recording showcases the individual member's considerable musical talents. I originally paid $30 for the CD when it first became available and it was worth every penny. Neal Schon's playing rivals any of the work found on his solo records. Ross Valory contributes a piano piece backed by a string quartet. He also rearranged "Conversations" on the first record into "The Rape" with a broad range of orchestration. Steve Smith's drums own "Sandcastles". And Steve Perry shows off his full range on "Destiny".

I hesitate to call this a Rock record. The vast majority of it sounds like New Age or Contemporary Jazz. Still, open-minded Journey fans who like a broad range of musical styles will find little not to like on this outstanding album.

Definately A Different Journey
I have the vinyl copy and it is excellent but without a turntable, I can't use it. I always question why this is not released in the CD format in the US? It is part of the Journey collection. I'm not sure though that it's worth the money to buy an import but any hard core Journey fan would love to have it. Maybe Columbia records will see this post and consider putting it in the CD format in the US so all Journey fans will have this must album for their own. Without it, your Journey collection is incomplete.

JOURNEY Like You've Never Heard Them Before !
A great collection of instrumental music (with some vocals) from one of the greatest rock bands of ALL TIME ! You have to own this CD, you won't be disappointed AT ALL !.

One of the best art-rock albums I've ever heard
Steve sings his best and the performances of Neal and Smitty totally blew me away. Recorded at the end of the Evolution World Tour, during the pre-productions sessions for Departure, in the early 1980, Dream After Dream is a really great effort, with smooth melodies, strings and horns, arranged and conducted by Neal's father, the late Matthew Schon, and it really shows Journey in a new and refreshing direction. A must for all Journey-crazed fans, Dream after Dream is a rare but a state of the art piece of collection. Here you will experience energy, relaxing moods, melancholy (Snow Theme, written by bassist Ross Valory is a great tune), so it is an album that inevitably it invites to be heard over and over and over!.
