pre-Perry and perfect
Perry's addition as lead vocalist made the band millionaires. this is one of the three albums released by Journey prior to the addition of Steve Perry. Prior to that they were musicians, and accomplished musicians in fact.
If you loved the 80's era arena rock Journey. . . then do not buy this album! If you loved the musicianship of the 70's and believed that every good band had a keyboardist-one who was treated like a band member-and a soulful sounding vocalist, then this is the album for you.
Of the three pre-Perry albums this is the last and definitely the best. Put on your head phones and enjoy what music used to sound like. .

starting to lose it here
The songwriting doesn't quite hit the same point of excellence for me. Journey's Next really shows signs that the band was about ready to change into a more commercial direction. I can't remember how most of these songs go when the album is finished, especially the heavier parts of the songs. That doesn't mean they're bad songs or anything, because every song on here has its moments.

The vocals just don't quite hit the same high point that the ones from the debut and Look to the Future did. Also, some of the vocal melodies feel like they rush along at a sloppy pace. Maybe it's just me.

BUT, the guitar playing is really really good, and that's why I'm giving the album a pretty decent score. Plus, the music still SOUNDS good because it's mid 70's hard rock with an experimental edge. The band is still pretty good here. I just feel a bit letdown with the songwriting compared to the previous two albums. .

Journey-Next
This CD, which I use to have the album but between moving, storage, and moving my albums got damaged. Next

Love this CD, went to see their concert, it was fantastic. I am really happy I found and purchase this CD.

Mind blowing and bigger than life
I appreciate the newer stuff to a degree- I could do without Raised on Radio (by far Journey's most lame album) and I was not terribly impressed with Steve Augeri, but Perry for the most part was great. I am not going to diss Steve Perry- in my opinion he is an awesome and amazing singer. So far I think Pineda can handle the range and fits in well, we shall see. But- Next, as well as Journey and Look Into the Future, is a different genre altogether than what the band was/is with Perry/Augeri or Pineda. I appreciate the just plain hardcore almost jazz fusion quality of this album. In comparison to Journey's newer stuff it's almost counter culture. It's music for musicians, but a bit too instrumentally complex for the general public to appreciate. Neal Schon is not only a versatile and prolific guitarist (and he is master of many styles, genres and subgenres- check out his solo stuff as well as SoulSirkus, etc. ) but also shall we say an interesting singer. He sings the lead vocal on "Karma" which is my favorite song on this CD. As a former lead singer and bass player in a metal band (it's been a long time) I appreciate both a vocally oriented band (Journey now) and a primarily instrumental jazz fusion/blues type band (Journey then. ) Both good- but different.
