Tip of the Iceberg Joy Division is the one of the best bands ever, period. This is a great record. This is an excellent starter to get into Joy Division. It's a great record also. I only gave it 4 stars because I'm not a big fan of compilations. The disc is packed with great songs taken from all points in Joy Division's short career. The problem is the band advances it's sound so rapidly from it's first songs to there last. It comes off sounding a little choppy to me. If you really want to experience Joy Division at their most powerful listen to "Unknown Pleasures" (The 2nd best record of all time)and "Closer" (The best record of all time). This is not to say that Joy Division don't have good individual songs (They do and in spades!!). Joy Division are best when listened to in a full album.
Perfect introduction to Joy Division
The studio albums capture the band at particular points in time, but this collection is more complete because it covers the band's entire career. 'Substance' was my introduction to Joy Division, and unlike some reviewers below, I think it's actually the best place to start for new fans.
It's important to note that this is not a "Greatest Hits" type release or a replacement for the studio albums. Only 'She's Lost Control' appears from the albums, and even then in a different mix. 'Substance' is instead a collection of Joy Division's non-album tracks, including the entire 'Ideal for Living' EP and all of the band's singles. All of the well-known Joy Division songs are here, including 'Transmission', 'She's Lost Control', 'Dead Souls', 'Atmosphere' and of course 'Love Will Tear Us Apart', but there are also rare singles such as 'Digital' and 'Autosuggestion'. The latter in particular is a lost classic, building up slowly over five minutes before exploding with energy at the very end. Several B-sides are included as well, and again there are some real hidden gems here; the almost funky 'Glass', the restrained 'From Safety to Where', the tribal 'Komakino' and the near pop of 'These Days'.
Joy Division progressed rapidly through their short career, and 'Substance' allows us to follow their transition from the raw punk of their first songs through to their classic post-punk sound, with their final singles giving a hint of the dance/New Wave direction New Order would take. It's fascinating to note that even on early songs like 'Leaders Of Men' and 'No Love Lost', there are already signs of the dark, arty introspection that characterised their later work.
Essential for all Joy Division fans, and in its own way even more important than the two studio albums. .
classic from 1987
It showed, at the time, the development of the group before Ian's death. first released at the height of New Orders fame. Transmission, written primarily by Bernard, shows the sound which would eventually become New Order. If you listen to Joy Division's work (1977-1980), and then listen to the bands from the post punk era/early 80's, you can hear the influence Joy Division had on the English music scene at the time. A group not to be dismissed.

You won'e be disappointed.
I've been listening to it for 20 years and it is still one of my favorites. I have hundreds of CDs in my collection and this one is always near the top of the pile. A historic masterpiece.
