Customer Review Great Californian Psychedelia They're command of exotic instruments is often impressive making this an eclectic listening experience. This is a very solid set considering it's Kaleidoscope's first release. Of the 10 songs, 7 are very good to excellent while 3 good time jug band songs are comparatively weak. These jug band songs give the band some eclectic depth but also hurt the album from attaining truly classic status. Many California bands had roots in jug bands which explains why these songs are included on such albums. Oh Death is a solid and early venture into American roots music. Keep Your Mind Open is often considered a psychedelic classic while Please is an excellent slice of folk rock (its been covered many times). Just think of the Byrds from they're classic 5th Dimension and Younger Than Yesterday albums. Thats the kind of sound we're dealing with on this album. Its a solid addition to any 60's rock record collection. I also recommend Kaleidoscopes 2nd (Beacon) and 3rd (The Incredible) albums if you like this release (althought the band jams more on later albums).
