great album great atmoshpere and very good and sad lyrics. Great album like any other Katatonia album, the second one with clean vocals wich i like better but the vocals of Mikael Akerfeldt were great and are great. maybe its a good comparision comparing them to The Cure if they went metal. but comparing them to Weezer like someone did here is just stupid. Katatonia have more talent in their little fingers then Weezer have, but still they are ok too.
but if you like great sad music buy this album and any other from Katatonia especialy the Great Cold Distance wich i think is there best album. and the Live Consternation album and dvd are great too.
Katatonia coming into their own on this release
"Tonight's Decision" is the second full length release where they started to use clean vocals exclusively, and I believe the vocals on this release were produiced by Mikael from Opeth, and you can really tell!!! They are as progressive as Tool or Dream Theater, heavy as Venom or ". Katatonia is probably THE most unique band in the underground metal scene, I wish these guys could get more recognition than they do. . . Puppets" era Metallica, somber like Opeth or Pink Floyd, but also sometimes catchy like Black Sabbath, CKY, Black Label Society or Lacuna Coil. If you like ANY of the bands I mentioned, or bands like Perfect Circle, Rush, even Korn, Godsmack or Disturbed, you will definitely like Katatonia!!.
"You could never sleep at night if you knew what I've been through."
This album blew me away at the time I first heard it in '99 as great example of the Cure gone metal. Above are some of the best lyrics Jonas has conjured. . . it has since been eclipsed by the albums after it but is as essential as anything Katatonia has done from Brave Murder Day onwards. Really more of 4. 5/5 but then again most their albums are. Also has Dan Swano on drums (Nightingale, Edge of Sanity, producer of Opeth's Morningrise and Orchid).
My first Katatonia cd, and now a fan for life!!!!
It is well done and has a great atmospheric sound throughout the entire cd. I picked this album up about a year ago and loved it immediately. It has a gloomy, moody sound to it, which is great for an album because that is what any good album should do, create a mood while listening to it. I have since bought viva emptiness, and last fair deal gone down. I consider all the albums excellent and perfectly done. I still love this album.
Don't get the wrong idea...
This is a very good album, it was my first katatonia album and I like it a lot. I wanted to review this album because I don't want the only review to be a bad one. I don't know if it's true that this is nothing new or original, but that doesn't really matter. Considering that many of the people listening to katatonia are going to be metal fans, this is a lot different from what you will generally hear in metal. Also compared to Katatonia's early work this is quite different. It's possible that there are other bands out there that have this sound but do it better (I presume the other reviewer thinks so) but I don't know these bands so I can't say.
As for this album, it is very dark and beautiful sounding with a lot of memorable songs. Out of all of Katatonia's releases in this style (discouraged ones, tonight's decision, last fair deal gone down, viva emptiness) TD is probably the most laid back. They are all different and good. I would probably start with viva emptiness, then this, then LFDGD. It is hard to find discouraged ones but it doesn't really matter when you get that. This is a worthy addition to any fans collection, and not a bad place to start if you're new to katatonia. Unless, of course, you're looking to hear their old death metal stuff. .
