Customer Reviews still wonderful after all these years I was ecstatic to discover they had re-formed in 2000(though in a somewhat different form). Several months ago I was browsing Amazon's music department,when I happened upon a review of "Three Classics",the compilation of Kayak's work from 1977-1980. I decided to order one of their 4! newer cd's,settled on "Close to the Fire"-and became hooked again. I then decided to get caught up on their back catalogue,and was shocked to discover 8 stidio and a,somewhat,live album!In 1978,as a bit of Dutch-American music history,Kayak's only recordings available in the U. S. were a "bastardized" version of Starlight Dancer(with songs ,also, from "Last Encore"-tho incredibly some of the finer songs from both were omitted?),"SeeSee the Sun",and of course,the brilliant "Royal Bed Bouncer". After "Starlight" made some noise here,"Phantom of the Night" and "Periscope Life" were also released. Incredibly,the original "Merlin" was never released here until just recently. Also,the self-titled "Kayak" was never released. It's a long journey to get to a review,I know,but maybe this helps to understand why kayak is not a household name. Song by song,I'd have to admit,"Bed Bouncer" is probably better,but for sheer brazen originality,my choice for fave Kayak cd is this one. Opening with a rather typical rocker,"Alibi",the album really takes off on the next track,"Wintertime",which displays what will become a Kayak trademark for the next several years,a vaguely Beatlesque keyboard riff,haunting Sherpenzeel melody, with a typically quirky Max Werner vocal. Add some Brian-Dennis Wilson-like background vocals,and you have their special formula. Other highlights include-almost everything--"Woe and Alas" is a really beautiful number,and then there are the 2 progressive epics,the 9 minute "They Get To Know Me" and 6 min. "Trust in the Machine". The extra track(and 1974 single)"We Are Not Amused" is a pounding glam rocker Bowie would've been proud to claim!. kayak Sorry about my english Bye. I'm a fun of kayak, Moddy blues, ELO, Peter Gabriel, The BEATLES of course I'm waiting news from people who likes this kind of music. .
