Highlights for me was Oingo Boingo's title track, "Circle" by Max Carl, "Deep In the Jungle" by Wall of Voodoo, "(Why Don't Pretty Girls) Look At Me" by the Wild Men of the Wonga, "Method to My Madness" by Lords of the New Church and "Eighties" by Killing Joke. This is one of the most entertaining, distinctive soundtracks from the eighties. Certainly a better ratio of good to bad songs than other John Hughes films, catchy and danceable. If you find it on tape, give it a listen. And if you are one of the powers that be at MCA, re-release this on CD! It will sell at least as good as "Repo Man". . Why is this not in print after all these years??? I see used copies pop up on occasion on eBay and the fierce shark-style feeding frenzy that follows as people wage fierce bidding wars trying to get their hands on it. I own the cassette and have enjoyed it ever since the movie's original debut. It's been heavily in demand for reissure for years. It's fun, quirky, catchy and a great picker-upper. So why is this fun little package still out of print? Oh well, it's unfortunately not the first time that a great soundtrack has been neglected by labels. . . But anyway, on to the music itself. A great and fun little mix of eighties sounds at the time, from the immortal Oingo Boingo title track to an arresting cover by Cheyne of Prince's "Private Joy" (which originally appeared on his notorious "Controversy" album and remains one of the most catchy little ditties he ever wrote during that period). It also has a delightfully catchy and hilarious little piece called "Why Don't Pretty Girls (Look At Me)", the hypnotic "Turn It On" by Kim Wilde, and. . . and. . . and. . . oh man, you've just got to hear it. I could go on and on about how cool this album is, but instead I'll just list one more example: There's a brief scene that lasts only a few seconds in the movie (just before the bikers crash into the house) where you see the party going on in that home, the whole place wall to wall with partying youth, all bouncing up and down wildly in perfect unison while a delightfully loud, wild, speaker-splitting song keeps shrieking over and over again, "EIGHTIES!!! I'M LIVING IN THE EIGHTIES!!!" When I recently saw that scene again, I told an old friend (who agreed with me) as I pointed to the screen, "Now THERE'S the essence of what the entire era was like captured perfectly within just a few feet of film!" Well, that song is here too. It's called "Eighties" (natch) and performed by none other than Killing Joke! Yes, THAT Killing Joke! Now if only someone would just re-release this little gem. . . . .
