Customer Review
Calm and understated beauty...
NB: The Killjoys from Melbourne, Australia, are not to be confused with the Killjoys of Canada. .

If you're already a fan of the Sundays then you're probably going to like the Killjoys. Very similar quality to the music. In fact those two bands seem to have had almost parallel careers. This is music to chill out to, beautifully mellow and relaxed but also really happy. Good for the soul. Anna Burley has one of those soaring drifting female voices which floats perfectly over the Killjoys nicely balanced musical spaces. The opening track "Change Your Mind" is a bright happy vibe to kickstart this great album, but as a longtime fan my standout on "Sun Bright Deep" is definitely track 4 "Walking With Me" - I find it's just a classic beautiful Killjoys song: strummed acoustic guitar with a hint of some violin, and Anna's lovely voice. "Sun Bright Deep" is a much fuller and more confident album than previous releases, much more complete. It has a better balance of the moody slow & quiet tracks with the bright & sunny pop, and all the songs are great. I've followed this Melbourne band since the beginning and this is only their third album, after "Ruby" (1990) and "A Million Suns" (1993). They've also released several EPs along the way though: "Audrey" (1989), the fantastic "Spin" (1991), "Love and Uncertainty" (1994), plus a couple of 3 trackers in 1996. Each Killjoys release is a lush uplifting experience. A fourth Killjoys album "Guildford Lane" is supposedly scheduled for imminent release in 2003. As new Killjoys stuff seems to be getting rarer these days, I'd recommend double-checking for it because by the time you read this it may be available. The Killjoys are yet another fine example of how the Australian music industry still elbows its finest talent to the back of the room as it tramples itself to get a spot on "Popstars". Think of the way the Triffids, the Go-Betweens, or the Clouds have unforgiveably struggled, well the Killjoys are another very talented Aussie band deserving a break. I say, if you haven't heard of the Killjoys before then this album could well be the latest obscure gem that you've been hoping to discover.
