King Crimson Live: 1974 on Two CD's.
Although when they regrouped in the 80's, they had some different band members, and might have achieved more commercial success. This was probably the peak of King Crimson, artistically speaking that is. In any case, in 1974, Bruford, Wetton and Fripp, put out some great Progressive Rock Music, which is captured here on two discs, live.

The beginning of the Collector's Club releases into the mainstream
Since 1999 KC has been releasing a series of Collector's Club cds documenting the band's history with live releases and rehearsals. This is a great release. This release comes from one of the band's peak era's in 1974 with two shows combined unlike the CC which is one at a time and more expensive. The first show is a two track recording from the band's tour of West Germany March 30, 1974 Mainz and includes the rarely released Dr Diamond which when released as a Collector's Club release, marked only the second release of the song. Disc two is the concert from which the album USA was made complete, without the edits and studio additives. This release is as strong as any that the band have released as the performances are all top notch. .

In the Collectible Court of King Crimson

The band - Robert Fripp, John Wetton, Bill Bruford, and David Cross - is truly captured the way they were heard (U. What is promising to be a stunning series of live material that chronicles the vast career of King Crimson, the first volume of the 2-CD sets is from 1974, with the concerts from Mainz, Germany, and Asbury Park. S. A. has studio overdubs by Eddie Jobson on several of the live tracks), and the jazz-like approach to improvisation is especially heard in what was the final lineup before Fripp took a hiatus of several years from performing.

Touring gave the band the opportunity to work outside the framework of delivering studio recordings note-by-note, which made each venue a truly unique experience for the fans and musicians. The Collectible King Crimson will provide a special peak into the musical genius of Fripp. .

Greetings From Asbury Park...
Already having the Mainz concert from the King Crimson Collector's Club release, I too was disappointed to have to "shell-out" for a double disk set to obtain the Asbury Park show, but I had no choice since I was there! I can remember Golden Earring's set (their drummer launched himself over his kit at one point!), but I can't remember if anyone else opened (e-mail me if anyone remembers. . ). This was the third (and unfortunately) last Crimson concert I had attended, and as I remembered (even through my "chemical" fog) they really BURNED! Another reviewer used the term "snarling beast", and he is right on! Highly recommended!!!.

Fripp's love / hate relationship with the "USA" album continues
The set from Providence, especially the bombastic take on "Easy Money," made "Deceiver" an instant classic. The box set "Great Deceiver" (essential concert material from the Wetton-Bruford years) was intended, in part, to stand as proof that "USA" wasn't the "best" or "only" live document from that era. That said, it didn't diminish the core KC fan appetite for "USA" one bit. Fripp ultimately relented during the 30th Anniversary "miniature cardboard sleeves" era of Crimson reissues on CD. Bonus tracks were added, but it was still the edited gig. . . just as it appeared on the original vinyl release. The Asbury Park CD from "Collectible KC Vol 1" presents the show as it happened. . . no edits on "Asbury Park" or "Easy Money," no Eddie Jobson overdubs. It doesn't matter if the potential consumer is a King Crimson purist or a casual fan. The Fripp-Wetton-Bruford-Cross KC was one snarling beast. . . less calculatingly eccentric and precise than the Belew rebirth and more like four virtuoso musicians in a take-no-prisoners battle to death for the spotlight. The 1974 tour resulted in the band's breakup and the posthumous assembly and tweaking of the "USA" tapes, but this new release allows you to put yourself in that Asbury Park audience. . . the next best thing to being there. If you have "Great Deceiver" and "Night Watch," you'll want this. .
