With a clear aversion to the plural form and all the while displaying a penchant For the capitalization Of prepositions, William "Of Singular" Hogeland provides the most aimless and uninformed liner notes since Somebody Somewhere came up with "Hatfield of the North" and had the nerve to let it reach print -- a now tired olde forme of KommunicKation that at least offers an audience (ye fellowes in readership) the Permanent Hilarity of Overlooked Errors. In short, the liner notes are flat out dumb stuff, unbefitting of their subject. But importantly, the performance is present, though of the past and often quite tense.

The presentation is close to one of those times one might imagine being capable of egging Fripp on to declare that Music had in fact entered the room. There are a few rare moments: the naked sounding "Stick Duet" and an atypical "Intro". And, overall, we have here another document of the too scarce "double trio" alignment. How the rest differs from the many performances documented among the many volumes of "The Collectors' King Crimson" I will need more time and concentration to sort out, but I have no regrets in purchasing this "Immortal" release. Still, as a general observation, I do tend to think that the Belew iterations of King Crimson do best on stage when pre-Belew material is not part of the set. But by this date (1995) the stylistic matters were settling and, some 15 years on, it is no longer so jarring to hear "The Talking Drum" set in proximity to the Streisand-inspired abomination that is "People" ("mainspring", not "the luckiest").

The sound quality tends to match up with the craft of the musicians, though the mix seems entirely off the board. While there's never the splintering, nearly collapsing edginess of a "Peoria" or "Asbury Park", there is some very present compulsion, some thing that makes the live work a more than suitable companion to the studio work, each reflecting the other, no matter which might first impel these artists.
