EVERGREEN But if her register is less epanded she covers up for it in her outstanding presence and vocal texture. Ms Knight may have a lesser range in her tessitura compared to Franklin. Ms Knight, thanks to her clever singing technique, have yet decades left to continue her precious singing and enchant several generations with her soulish bravura and surpremecy.
It is true, that an artist that have produced tons of albums, may have difficulties in continous development and ms Knight sometimes goes for easy targets with mainstream ballads but who inte world does them better than Ms Knight ? Much as I hate the idea that she has been exiled in Las Vegas I have to surrender to the market forces as much as everybody else and to see an endless stream of new capable singers launched every month and gone by the hour. Ms Knight, howevere, is an evergreen and therefore she may go on spellbinding us with her sensual, vibrato tremoli for decades to come. Brava, Gladys ! You show them, girl !! Douglas Modig.
American Icon
I saw her at the recent Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra concert featuring these arrangements with backup from her band and the symphony. Gladys Knight is an American icon. She was amazing and drew constant applause from a very large enthusiastic audience. The arrangements on this CD are different from what others have done in the past but still a wonderful accomplishment from one of the greatest female vocalists of our time. You go, girl!.
My preference
I love Gladys's voice and the big band distracts me when I listen to this CD. My preference would have been to hear Gladys with a piano, bass and drums trio.
Gladys is better than ever!
Gladys Knight has even improved with age. This is one of the very best standards albums out. True talent is not a gimmick. Her renditions are clean and true to her style and the original styling of the artists. This is a great listen!.
EMPRESS OF SOUL scores 5 stars
Gladys, without histrinoics and overdoing, performs each track on "Before Me" superbly. The Empress of Soul, Gladys Knight, shows her versatility in taking on classics of legendary singers, all of whom she met except Billie Holiday. She infuses each song with that intrinsic soul that is the most soulful voice in contemporary music; the EMPRESS especially re-invents "God Bless The Child. " Along with this CD is a companion "The Making of Before Me" CD. It is a fact-filled treat in and of itself. This CD is highly recommended for the fan of the EMPRESS and the casual listener. You will not be disappointed!!!!!!.
