Great CD They were playing it in the shop and what immediately caught my ear was the combination between the traditional bag pipes and a rock guitar. I bought this CD last week during my holiday in Scotland in a shop in Gretna Green. I decided to buy the CD although I had only heard one track and must say that it was an excellent buy. I can't add more than the other critics, so my only recommendation is, listen to the samples and make up your own mind. I can recommend it with all my heart.
If only for "The Gael"..
. To add to the other favorable reviews above, I should like to say that their rendition of "The Gael" from the movie "Last of the Mohicans" is worth the price of the CD alone. . quite simply, it sends chills down my spine it is that moving.
Excellent CD for any occasion
Even I am more of a tradition and believe that not all new things are good, but this CD is the exception. If you are looking for something different, you have found the right CD. The CD features both easy listening and uplifting tunes, everyone should have no problem finding your favorite. I listen to it everyday when I drive. In fact, I'm listening to it as I type this review!.
Scots Dagoons Guards Go Modern!
The Scots DGs can't seem to decide if they're inspired by Rock or New Age here. This is a weird album. The sounds are way modern for sure. Since losing their regimental band in 1994 the pipes & drums of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards have been struggling to maintain their innovative edge. Here they have plunged into a modern sound with pipes which certainly contrasts with anything traditional. Some newer pipe tunes are re-tuned for keyboards and the like, exploring potential new sounds and combinations. The whole CD is experimental in nature. "Amazing Grace" gets a bit of a face-lift, but remains essentially the same.
The most effective piece is probably the extended Pibroch selection. Too bad there is not at least one semi-traditional pipes & drums medley to contrast all the modern stuff here. The Scots DGs use to mix the old with the new more than they seem to be doing these days. This CD has much in common with their recent release "Spirit of the Glen".
The Scots DGs have embraced a new sound for the pipes, and those that like a weird combo of Rock and Celtic might get a tickle out of this. To me it seems they have taken a leap into the dark here, embracing the new, while perhaps neglecting some of the tradition that always made them so special in the past. .
Excellent CD, broad range of tunes
As the title suggests, the artists are mainly the pipers and drummers of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards circa 2002-2003. _Parallel Tracks_ by the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards is an excellent compilation of traditional and contemporary bagpipe playing. There are a number of accompanying musicians, the most famous of which is Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits, but also including Natasha Jenkins on vocals, Natalie Bonner on violin, and Ant Clark on guitar, keyboard, grand piano, and digital percussion.
There are 15 tracks in all, some of which are very slow (and actually kind of depressing), other of which are so fast-paced you'll want to get up and dance! It really does have "something for everyone", and I would consider this an excellent introductory CD for someone who is ambivalent about pipe and drum music. .
