Beautiful Orchestration!
"Get Luck" was not love at-first-listen for me, but it has really grown on me over time. I will pre-order and buy a new Mark Knopfler album any day! He writes like Dylan, plays guitar like Clapton (different style, but you get the idea), and his compositions keep getting better and better, especially in the good company of the likes of Guy Fletcher and Richard Bennett. I likened it to Ragpicker's Dream," a bit slow for my tastes. My wife, on the other hand, liked it a lot from the start, and after several times listening, I grew to like it more, and I dug out the song lyrics. After that - I loved it to the point that I would now rate it as my favorite album of 2009!
The disc has not been out of our 5-disc player since it arrived more than a month ago. I actually like every song on the album, but my personal favorites are "Monteleone," "The Car was the One," and the title track. "Monteleone" is beautifully assembled. A "gear-head," Mark has written two of the best songs about racing I know, "Nazareth" and now this. The title track "Get Luck" is a beautiful, upbeat ballad - and it is my current favorite!
I hear just the slightest-bit of Simon and Garfunkel's "April Comes She Will" in certain parts of the melody of "Remembrance Day. " I like it!
The orchestration sets this album apart for me. Sure, I love screaming guitars and intricate solos, but that's another album. It's the arrangements that make this collection special for me. I think that Guy Fletcher had a lot to do with that aspect of this album, and I hope that there will be STRINGS that accompany the band on their spring North American tour. I am looking forward to hearing Mark and his band play the Paramount Theatre in Oakland, a fantastic, perfectly renovated venue.

A Beautiful Compilation
From start to finish, one of the best CD's that I have listened to in quite some time. This CD is a beautiful and evocative musical masterpiece. I think that it is Knopfler's best solo effort yet. Can't wait to see some of these songs live!.
Lyrical and haunting
If I had to pick one song as the best, it would be the sad, haunting, but stoic "So Far from the Clyde," the story of a ship's last journey to the scrap-yard. This is a concept album in the best sense of the term, a collection of lovely songs each of which could stand on its own, but that also make a complete work that you'll want to listen to in full. Ships, trucks, cars and guitars may be just man-made, inanimate things, but the people who make them, play them, sail them, drive them and work with them do come to love them, and that wonderful relationship between men and their work, their arts, and their crafts comes through in Knopfler's music. .
Mark Knopfler through and through
This album has a nice English countryside feel to it but opens up with friendly Scottish vibe. Mark Knopfler has a unique story telling approach.
Wonderful album!
The release in beginning fall was of course familiar. Hearing the title -Get Lucky- I was not sure what to expect from Mark this time.
Having it heard once I was enthusiastic about this CD and it has been getting better with each time listening to it. Best music to enjoy the fading year at the fireplace with a cup of tea. Good melodies, nice scottish folk elements paired with Mark Knopflers guitar riffs and licks make it perfect.
Strong recommendation!
