Having never really heard of the guy before picking this up as a Deal-o-the-Day, I find it to be a modern classic - something like an "After The Gold Rush" 2009, though I wouldn't make sure a direct comparison. The amount you'll like this record seems to be inversely proportional to the expectations you have about a new Ben Kweller record. Some folks seem to be complaining that this is "country". Okay, this ain't country. It's not 4 chord pop. It's music that comes from a mindset that might have seen a few firebugs hovering over a hollow just after sunset. In short, if other modern artists had a quarter of the heart this album pulses with, music might start meaning something again. Since that won't happen, get this thing and sleep with it under your pillow. Sweet dreams.


My whole family loves Ben
I will keep it short and sweet; Ben Kweller would be the only artist I would buy a ticket to go and see right now.


Great change of pace
Different than his previous efforts. Very good album. More country/bluegrass in nature but still singer songwriter.


Awesome
i love the pedal steel and of course his lyrics are great. The man can play any type of music he wants and to hear him go back to his texas/southern roots is awesome. get the album, and if you don't like it then your missing out. slide guitar, pedal steel, and good lyrics are what this album are all about. if your not into that then your obviously not from dixie.


Daring change but it pays off
I mean, Kweller's 2004 album "On My Way" was a favorite of mine, and that was as far away as you can be from country-twang. As a long time Ben Kweller fan, let me admit upfront that I was somewhat (ok, a lot) sceptical of Kweller's rumored full embrace of country-twang for the new album.

"Changing Horses" (10 tracks; 36 min. ) plows full head into the country-twang, and when I had heard one track before its release I feared the worst. Having heard the full album now, I can tell you that my fear was unfounded. Sure, it's quite a departure from Ben's earlier albums, but somehow it works. There are no particular highlights or lowlights on this album, the short tracks swimmingly flow from one into another, and either the overall sound will attract you, or it won't. For me, it worked. The album reminds me a lot of Ryan Adams' "Jacksonville City Nights" album incidentally.

In all, I quite like "Changing Horses", despite my early scepticims. That said, this being such a radical departure from Ben Kweller's earlier albums, it really makes me wonder what is next for Kweller. Is this just a one album departure, or is this the direction that Kweller has decided to go on from now? Time will tell.
