"Can't kill my soul and kill my dream."5 out of 5
*"Survive. My rating: 4. " A decently heavy song with good percussion, guitar, and some interesting trumpet-like sounds in the background. Lyrics, vocals, and melody are good. Heck, the lyrics and vocals are good on all of these songs (they're all duets).
*"I Won't Tell You. " A faster, slightly more upbeat song. Has excellent vocals and a good melody.
*"Not Enough. " A more downbeat song, featuring some good strings and piano, but is not too slow or dull.
*"I'm Not Afraid. " An excellent, heavier song with an interesting melody, strong guitar, and some good strings.
*"I Like It. " This song has a higher tempo and stronger percussion and guitar. Melody is not bad. It's quite energetic.
*"Underdog. " Although more downbeat, this song still has a good tempo, melody, and lyrics (part of which appears in this review's title). Guitar is excellent.
*"The Pain. " A little slow, but has excellent percussion, guitar, and some lovely vocals (especially during the chorus). Guitar and bass are good. Melody is haunting.
*"Spellbound. " A faster song with stronger guitar. Melody and vocals are alright.
*"Wide Awake. " Probably the slowest song on the album, but it's still not bad. Has good percussion, vocals, piano, and acoustic guitar. Melody is okay.
*"The Maze. " A faster, energetic song with good guitars and vocals.
*"Unchained. " Another moderately-paced song with a strong guitar and good vocals.
*"Shallow Life. " Slower song, but with strong percussion, strings, and pleseant vocals. It's nice.
*"Oblivion" (bonus track avaliable only on import albums). A little heavier song, with some great guitar, percussion, and vocals. Has some haunting strings. Pretty good melody.
As I understand it, this album is supposed to have a greater Arabic influence. In some songs (like "Survive" and "I'm Not Afraid"), I think it's notable, and makes for some of the most interesting, exotic, and haunting melodies. All of the songs seem to have a common theme about individuality and sticking up for oneself. Altogether, this album strikes me as being every bit as good as "Karmacode" and "Comalies," if not better. Heck, I love all of this band's albums, but these last three seem to have the most energy and some of the most striking melodies. It would seem that most people are saying that this album is not so good, due to over-commercialization, but I love it anyway.
The bonus track is pretty decent, but I'm not sure if it's worthwhile for the casual listener. I'd reccomend the expensive import only for Lacuna Coil fans and completists.
I'm not sure what kind of packaging the normal album comes in. The import I have came as a book-type thing that opens up with some neat band photos on a nice matte finish. One end had a pocket for a booklet, which had more band pictures and lyrics.
